Reviews

Syl Katherine Helmond and Cathryn Damon played sisters, Jessica Tate, and Mary Campbell, who lived in suburban Connecticut with their husbands, Chester Tate, and Mr. Campbell. Their families interact with each other. The sitcom was groundbreaking for having a regular gay character, Jodie Dallas (played by Billy Crystal) but it also showed infidelity. Jessica has three children and a butler, Benson Dubois (Robert Guilliame who would have his own sitcom series). Mary has two sons including Jodie and a son, Danny, in the mob. The husbands have as many secrets too. Robert Mandan's Chester Tate is an unfaithful jerk. Richard Mulligan's Mr. Campbell is responsible for Mary's first husband's death. The cast is first rate and so is the writing for the series. Despite a large cast, the series balances the company like an ensemble piece. I can't believe that I never got into it or the series ending after only four seasons. If you haven't seen this series, you have to see it to believe it.
Greatornot I have mixed emotions about this show. For the most part , a very well written SOAPCOM ... Yes thats what I call it. They had to get ridiculous by bringing in aliens. This totally threw the show out of any semblance of reality. The show otherwise was great. The show was not as brave though as others have mentioned. Remember this was already into the late 70s. You already had road-pavers like Norman Lear and to a lesser extent Carl Reiner. Still the show was for the most part very creative, with wonderful twists and turns. Rod Roddy as the narrator was simply awesome with his narratives pre and post the meat of the show. This was a fine sitcom with wonderful acting that paved the way for Billy Crystal, Ted Wass ,Richard Mulligan, Dinah Manoff, Robert Guillame and Katharine Helmond. I guess it was a spoof so to speak, but a well done spoof none the less , of the daytime soaps. In a nutshell, If you can get by the ridiculous Alien Burt EPs, this is a show worth watching from start to finish.
tfclougher Minister: What's the problem? Chester: There's no problem. She thinks it's a problem, but it's just a little thing. Minister: What do you think the problem is Mrs. Tate. Mrs.Tate: He goes through women like an elephant goes through peanuts. He cheated before the wedding. He cheated during the wedding with the bridesmaids. He cheated after the wedding.. He cheated with the nurses in the hospital when I gave birth. He cheated on our honeymoon. He cheated with the steno pool. He cheated with the other lawyers. This was the most outstanding writing I ever heard. Robert Mandan looked like such a weaselly fool and Katherine Helmond was just cool and fed up and cynical.
andy3472 For me Soap has always been my favourite TV comedy series. The characters were just fantastic - brilliantly played by all especially Burt and Jessica.Even the many small supporting characters stood out. The dopey Chief of Police Tinkler, the equally dopey Mrs David and the positively nutty Detective Donahue. My favourite story lines included Jessica's murder trial, Burt's alien abduction and the Demonic possession of Corinne's baby.Susan Harris wrote her characters extremely well with some great dialogue and exaggerated the soap opera clichés to the hilt. The show will always be a fondly remembered classic that, unlike some shows, doesn't fade or become less funny over time.
