EP6  Interview
Nov. 04,2002
Interview

Although slightly peeved that the staff seem to be taking his redundancy in their stride, David's spirits remain high as he plans his future while also being interviewed for an article in 'Inside Paper'. Tim takes drastic action when he learns that Dawn has resigned in order to move to the USA with boyfriend Lee. However, when David is told that his services as a motivational speaker are also no longer required he sinks to his lowest ebb and begs Neil to reconsider the dismissal. But is it too late?

EP5  Charity
Oct. 28,2002
Charity

It's Comic Relief Day and the staff of Werhnam Hogg all do their bit to raise money including Dawn, whose 'kisses for 1' stand finally provides Tim with the opportunity he's been waiting for. But when David can only produce a draft of his new gameshow concept in place of an important company report, Neil and Jennifer draw the line and inform him that he is being made redundant.

EP4  Motivation
Oct. 21,2002
Motivation

David's preparations for his first motivational training seminar that evening don't get off to the perfect start when he first discovers the staff's new nicknames for him that are doing the rounds and then receives another reprimand from Neil for neglecting his duties. Meanwhile, Tim and Rachel finally go public with their relationship, much to the dismay of Gareth.

EP3  Party
Oct. 14,2002
Party

A colleague's birthday provides a welcome distraction for the employees of Wernham Hogg and leads to a series of practical jokes at the expense of David and Gareth. Meanwhile, David's growing frustrations with new boss Neil constantly looking over his shoulder are somewhat alleviated by the arrival of two representatives from a public speaking company who seem keen to recruit him.

EP2  Appraisals
Oct. 07,2002
Appraisals

As David conducts the annual staff appraisals he discovers that the group from Swindon are less than impressed with their new boss and a lunchtime trip to the pub does little to improve the situation. The same cannot be said for Tim however, who is getting on particularly well with new girl Rachel.

EP1  Merger
Sep. 30,2002
Merger

As a result of the Swindon merger, a group of new staff arrive at Slough branch and David wastes no time in familiarising them with his unique style of management. Meanwhile, Tim seems to be taking his promotion very seriously.

studioAT Now I understand the appeal of 'The Office'. It was revolutionary at the time and well deserves its title of being a modern classic. But sometimes with comedy you have to put your hands up and say "it's not for me". And on this occasion I have to do that with this show. It's well written, it's well acted but I don't find it all that funny or to be honest the characters all that endearing other than in the Christmas specials that ended the show. Gervais was catapulted into the big time based on playing David Brent and fair play to him.I can't say though that I love the language that's often used or the sexual references. Some of the episodes plod along and the second series in particular is at times depressing. All these reasons are why I rank this show so low.
HeidiELove Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant The Office tells a story of a few people working in a British office working hard to get sacked or aspiring to the dreams of entering a "proper" profession…. A lot of viewers could relate to the frustrations and laughs of "Reality" Working environment and conditions. This UK Comedy won a Golden Globe - not for all it's glamor and "amazing cinematography" or having a huge budget - But because it's about real life and real people."The Office is the first non-American show nominated in the category of best television musical or comedy for a Golden Globe Award; and Ricky Gervais was the first non-American actor nominated for the lead role in a television comedy for the same award. The Office won both awards and left Sex and the City & Matt LeBlanc empty handed".It's smart, clever and most of all catches subtle humor. Using "realism" to leverage Ricky Gervais's gift for uncomfortable humor, the Office highlights the awkwardness, the so-called uncomfortable humor, to (hilariously) painful heights without overdoing it at any level. The Office is considered amongst the greatest British sitcoms of all time.
BayouGrl If you've watched the US show The Office(which is an American adaptation of the UK version) you might think this show is all the same story, etc. And while there are things you'll recognize as similar(documentary crew, paper company) there are plenty of things that are different. Some stuff I think I missed the joke, because I'm not living in the UK. But its funny in its own way, and if you watch it without trying to compare to the US adaptation, its amusing. After a couple of episodes, I stopped trying to figure out who was who vs a vs the US adaptation, and just enjoyed the show. The acting is decent and you find some people who are likable, some who make you cringe and some you'd rather go find a new job than work with every day. Just like any other office in the world.
Leofwine_draca THE OFFICE is one of my all-time great comedy TV shows and up there with the classic likes of FAWLTY TOWERS and MONTY PYTHON. I recently rewatched the lot - series 1 & 2 and the Christmas specials - and am pleased to report it holds up now better than ever. Even more so perhaps, given that Ricky Gervais's subsequent TV offerings - EXTRAS and LIFE'S TOO SHORT - have come across as diluted variants of this show. What makes THE OFFICE so successful? It has to be the documentary format, which makes the characters on screen feel real like never before. Anybody who's ever worked in an office will know how true-to-life the whole thing is, and the camaraderie between the main characters is what keeps this humming along. Watching the misadventures of Tim, Dawn, Gareth and Keith is just a delight. Yes, there's too much of an emphasis on lowbrow humour, but it's the character tics that make this work.Of course, Ricky Gervais's David Brent is the man who lords over it all, and he plays a surprisingly complex character. Given that his off-colour humour, desperation to be liked, and frequently humiliating situations all point towards somebody you should hate, Brent turns out to be Gervais's most likable creation ever. It says something that THE OFFICE is the only thing I truly like the comedian in. In any case, THE OFFICE is brilliant stuff and every episode is a zinger; it truly is untouchable.
