It was a pleasure to watch this series with Kenneth Branagh in the starring role. I admired Branagh back in the early years of his career in Shakespearean roles such as Henry V and Hamlet. This role requires a man of few words but Branagh's Wallander is superb. He has sacrificed his personal life in pursuit of criminals and has paid the price in family relationships, with his father, wife and daughter. His own health has taken a hit as well. Wallander is a man totally dedicated to his work. At times, he knows how he has distanced himself from his loved ones and wants to make amends. Wallander's job consumes him and he is incapable of reversing a life spiralling out of control. Wallander, despite his flaws, is someone we want to like because he has a good heart that shows in his compassion for the victims of crime. The background is often grim, with shots of dark landscapes, stormy waters, and a cold, Northern climate. There comes a period of renewal for Wallander when he manages to get control of his life, and becomes a doting grandfather. This is not to say that he is any less dedicated to solving murders but he does find a better balance. Stick with the series for its dramatic and touching conclusion, although understated. It is very true to Wallander, the character I came to like very much.

The acting may be fine and the lighting, sets, etc blah blah blah. But, what makes this series horrible is that they use persons from marginalized groups as the ultimate villains - this is what the worst Hollywood movies used to do. In the last episode of the 1st season, we have a transgender man as the murdering psychopath. In the episode of the 2nd season, we have Syrian and Persian immigrants as murdering crooks. Real smart. Good for humanity. Kudos to Branagh for great acting on a story/stories that perpetuate horrible stereotypes, violence, hatred, xenophobia, etc against such groups. Morons!!!! And critics from so many newspapers gushing over it without seeing what's obvious! My wife who is Asian told me most people wouldn't understand unless they're a minority. Well, I'm white and I can see how stupid it is - why can't most of you??? it's a disgrace and an insult to anyone disenfranchised.

Very glad to learn Ingeborga Dapkunaite is returning for the fourth season .. hopefully she can rescue him.. and this series from its dismal, doomed feeling.. (is there anytime any sun in these locations?). Wallander is a good show.. decidedly not for mass appeal, but none the less worthwhile viewing. But surely the lead character could be less distant and forlorn (it is never ending with doom and gloom surrounding him). The series needs to be rescued. Crime dramas are always less interesting than the life-stories of the characters described within them. There's three chances left.. let's roll the dice.. and wish it winds up on the side of hopefulness.

Just coming to the end of binge watching of this series. Really enjoy the stories and the characters. Kind of getting cliché of detective living 24hrs with their work. Like they will start using toothpicks on their eyes to keep awake. I am waiting for the 7 eleven detective series. If this is how detectives work than we would all have dysfunctional police forces. May as well go into Psychiatry. I like the series because it solves the crime in 130 minute. Broadchurch would be solved in the same time had Wallander been assigned to the case. One refreshing thing is, it hasn't been turned into a soap opera. Long running series eventually all fall into this trap. The walking dead was heading into this direction but thankfully characters started to fall. Wonder what the origin series was like.
