Reviews

David James Terrible acting, probably all inexperienced improv. Very unconvincing. Lots of repeated lines, indistinguishable cross-talk, insincere fear.. Actually, insincere everything. A lot of the time it just sounded like the actors didn't know what to say, which points to bad writing and directing. The "professor" seemed to be a man with a limited vocabulary, the "psychic" sounded like a canned phone-sex operator (which may actually be appropriate), and there was no apparent lead character. The psychic's lines were the only ones you could tell were written because it sounded like she was reading them. The guy in charge was kind of a douche... I think they were attempting to answer to question "what if the Ghost Hunters actually came across some ghosts?" The special effects were pretty much non-existent, and some of the coolest stuff they did was too subtle to notice (think Fight Club), and thus did not help the impact of the film. They spent a lot of time filming areas with no apparent activity (unless you were willing to move through each blank scene frame-by-frame), and they also did some jumping between irrelevant spaces. Sometimes it was difficult to tell where the footage was taking place, and the most interesting spot in the house (the crawl space) didn't actually get any meaningful air time. Maybe they really were afraid to go in there. That would've been a great place to find some bones or something. I honestly just looks like they lazily ripped off Paranormal Activity and the Ghost Hunter series simultaneously. Sad to say, though, it still wasn't worse than the worst movie I've seen (the name of which shall remain undisclosed). Apparently, they found a way to work in ripping a busty woman's shirt off, which is a plus. Well, not much of a plus because it 'exposed' the shallow nature of the filmmakers... but they WERE some great boobs. All in all, I'm not upset that I watched the movie.. after all, I sat through the entire Paranormal Activity movie series (and was surprised by the elaborate connectivity). However, if you get bored easily, stay far away from this one. I just kept waiting for something to happen...
dutchchocolatecake I am the first to admit that Asylum movies, for the most part, are a really really terrible way to waste hours of your life if you are bored. However, since seeing Paranormal Entity, I figured there had to be a few out there worth watching. This movie is one of them.I am not a fan of serial killer movies. The only reason why I decided to watch this one is because it is loose prequel to Paranormal Entity. I wish the Asylum would put as much imagination and effort into all their movies as they have that movie and this one. They should have kept making these movies rather than wasting money making cheesy knock offs of genres they are terrible at (sci-fi being one of many).Several things will surprise you: the acting is competent. Characters are fairly well written, and portrayed authentically. The camera shots aren't too shaky, and they make good use of stationary settings. Special affects were fair - the shadowy things were neat, but we could have done without the audio spookiness. Also, the house is supposed to be new but it looks very old. I could overlook that, if it weren't for the ancient fusebox in one of the scenes. If they would clean up the few mistakes they make in both Paranormal Entity and Gacy House, they'd have a couple of really good indie movies to brag about. I could do without the whole porn-star-boobs-in-your-face scenes, too.Overall, not a bad way to waste your time if you enjoy found footage movies, or if you're in the mood for something different. I'm glad to say this is one Asylum movie I didn't end up turning off after the first ten minutes.
roo-bear This is the worst movie that I have ever watched. I am not usually a horror movie fan, because I am a huge wuss, and get scared more easily than a 5 year old little girl. That statement alone should send up a red flag about the quality of this movie. I watched this movie with my boyfriend for Halloween, expecting to scream and jump and then have to sleep with the lights on. What happened was, we spent the entire movie mocking its lack of originality, consistency, and just bad judgement call in writing and acting. They made some obvious consistency errors, such as an actor turning off a lamp that wasn't on when viewed in the camera shot beforehand. Also things like travelling alone into areas where accidents had happened - typical bad movie behaviour. We waited the entire movie to be scared, or maybe even startled, but it never came. I felt like I was watching a poorly made low-budget student film. I understand and like the idea behind the movie, but they went about it all wrong. I have never posted a review before, nor have been compelled to until now. That is how bad it was. It's not even good for a "bad movie" night, which I enjoy from time to time. Just don't watch it. Trust me, your time is better spent elsewhere.
Bob_the_Hobo Gacy House probably deserves more of a 7 or 8 but I'll give it 10 to measure out the negative reviews, which the film in no way deserves. It serves it purpose and is a good film that stands out among the latest God-awful horror films.Gacy House is a pretty typical story, a group of people go to a supposedly haunted house to find out if it's haunted, sure enough, it is and the group is terrified by things that go bump in the night.I'm not a producer of the film, check my other reviews if you want. I just enjoyed Gacy House, I liked its simplicity. Shock factor comes from classic jumps; the person in front of the camera, the shadows and the characters reactions to these scares. I have to say, suspense is built extremely well through frequent returns to the cameras set up around the house.Acting is fine, half are very good, such as the leader of the team and the older professor accompanying them, and the rest are fine. Nothing really special but it's okay. The script is written well, a couple of scenes that aren't necessary but several that are really well done.Give it a try, if the first half doesn't catch you I doubt the rest of it will. All in all, a fun horror film that I enjoyed.
