Danny Blankenship Finally after many years watched the cult sci-fi fantasy classic from 1975 "A Boy and his Dog", and I must say wow it's clearly a different kind of picture really probably one that would not be made in today's market. Still the film has a clear message of survival and the need for man to have the basics of food and sex! Aside from that the movie is strange and crazy with a world that seems like something right out of a "Twilight Zone" episode only it's more crazier and bizarre even it seems your watching something abnormal. The story involves World War IV and it has just ended in 2024 lasting only five days and most of earth has been destroyed and ravaged as survivors struggle to find the basic things like food, shelter and friends. It's like earth is a hot wasteland of atomic garbage. And the lead character is a young man named Vic(Don Johnson 10 years before his breakout "Miami Vice" fame!)who has with him a talking and telepathic dog called Blood and both wonder the hot dirt like roads in search of food and ladies. Along the way Vic and Blood meet several strange people who show them a new world which may not be for the better. The movie is based on a novella from sci-fi author Harlan Ellison this picture is clearly dark in nature still it's blended with funny moments as it's a search trip and adventure thru a world of hunt and seek with the friendship between a boy and his dog taking over matters as that's the only plan to help both find the basics of food and companionship from the other sex. Overall good cult film to check out and watch and it's memorable for the fact that it's one of Don Johnson's very early works long before he became a household name.
SnoopyStyle It's 2024 after World War IV devastated the earth. Vic (Don Johnson) roams the desolate landscape with his smartaleck telepathic dog Blood scavenging for food and females. They track down a female Quilla June Holmes (Susanne Benton) hiding in her underground bunker. Blood doesn't like her. Her father Lou Craddock (Jason Robards) had sent her above ground to lure men down under where fertility has dwindled. Everybody wears paleface in a 1950s American small town society. Vic is going to be used as a stud but it's not as fun as it sounds. It's a weird unrealism. Some of it is a little funny. Then a lot of it is too weird. The underground world is too ridiculous. It takes me out of the movie. In the same time, it's not funny enough. It's very rapey which needs some much better jokes to ridicule it. This indie is definitely out there and I admire trying to take weird turns. It just needs to be funnier for it to work.
Laura Hill A strange apocalyptic tale about a boy and a dog. which seems exactly like what it says however the boy communicates with his dog telepathy and on the surface world it seems all civilisation is lost and they hunt for food and sex. I have to say and strange as it is, I find the relationship between the boy and the dog quite compelling. It takes another unsettling turn as he is lured into the underworld by a pretty girl and the boy discovers they have persevered the old ways of society and they plan to use him to procreate. This is a disturbing, bizarre and completely crazy story but you sort of can't help but be intrigue by it. Definitely not one for the easily offended. Not sure it is the sort of film you can say you enjoyed but definitely one to remember. geminiredblue Adapted from a short story by legendary sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison, A BOY AND HIS DOG is about a young man, named Vic, and his intelligent telepathic dog, named Blood. Together, they scout around in a post-apocalyptic desert. Scavenging for food and (maybe even more important for Vic) women. Vic's almost-insane single-minded pursuit of sex leads him at times to get into more than a few scrapes. Along the way, we're also introduced to a variety of odd characters. One of which, a self-appointed leader in animal skins and leather, forces his minions to pull him along on a hilariously large cart. Hmm, I wonder if the makers of Mad Max borrowed some ideas from this character?! Anyway, he then proceeds to have them dig for a hidden cache of food. At some point, Vic does in fact find a girl. But things don't turn out as expected, when she ropes him into a bizarre scheme to return to her underworld kingdom. The plot is at times hard to follow. That, combined with a general sense of weirdness and a somewhat chauvinistic attitude toward women, guaranteed that the film wouldn't be accepted by everyone. But it more than earns its cult status. The ending, while I won't give it away, does live up to the title.
