Finding an emotional outlet in the power of words and in the spiritual mysticism that he sees at work in her unparalleled gift, Eliza's father pours all of his energy into helping his daughter become spelling bee champion. David Coats This movie, whether everyone chooses to admit it or not, is a masterpiece. I think what many others are missing is that it is intended to leave you open ended, feeling the need to take it in. You really need to watch the credits and listen to its music to let the weight settle in. The mothers problems with stealing allow foreshadowing into the future spasm problem with the main character and though it may not seem like it, in a way the family comes back together again. Perhaps one touch I failed to see, though the movie is equally good without it, is the addition of this: As the MC walks away from the stage, she turns and smiles. You see her mother crying from inside the mental institute. I think it would have been great if she had mouthed "o-r-i-g-a-m-i" before turning away from the cameras.
pete_olds I can't remember when I last feel asleep watching a movie. Until Bee Season.I have the distinct feeling that I should find the book and read that, but I found this movie disappointing and unable to generate emotion in the audience partially because of the prevalence of overly simplified characters. The basic premise of the movie sounded interesting, but the execution did not bring any emotional engagement in a movie which could have offered so much more.I came away with the distinct feeling that it was an attempt by shallow people to make a deep movie.
adebeer I loved the film - it was dark, yes, but I liked the intrigue that is so common in all of our everyday lives - each one of that family wanted attention - not all in the correct way, but don't we all in our own special way? Richard Gere, as usual, was lovely to look at!!!!! No one overplayed and I was left with a feeling of uncertainty and I am still thinking about the film today. What should have been the main attention - namely the little girl's wonderful ability to spell - was in the end equaled and even overshadowed by her brother's search for religion, the father's search for acknowledgment and the mother's search for herself. All in all it was a lovely film and one you can watch with your children - a scarce thing these days.
wrlang Bee Season is not exactly what I expected. I pictured a heart warming film about trials and tribulations and ultimate success. Instead, this film was a walk on the eerie side of mysticism and emotional problems that haunt everyday people. The daughter hears the words in her spelling bees talk to her and can spell words she never even heard before. What's with that? The father takes her under his wing and teachers her kabalistic stuff of how the words she hears can connect her with God. The mother is a kleptomaniac looking to catch the light in stolen knick-knacks so she can talk with her dead parents, or at least come to grips with their deaths 30 years before. The son gets involved in hari christnas because of a pretty girl. The father is almost oblivious to his families impending disaster. An interesting little film that is well made and well acted, but not an uplifting adventure of any kind.
