isskrisktyliai This movie is brilliant for many reasons: 1) Acting - I really like Theresa Palmer as an actress, she might be one of my favourite actresses. In this movie she has proven herself again and did an amazing job. I have not seen many movies with Max Riemelt but he was in Sense 8 and he is a very good actor. 2) Story line - without giving out any spoilers. Gripping, unpredictable, emotional. 3) Directing - well directed, definitely not boring. Strongly recommend if you like movies that are a bit different and not like standard Hollywood movies.
Boristhemoggy Very contemporary, brilliantly videoed, artistically scored and intelligently acted. Teresa Palmer has to me always been just eye candy. But she shows her ability in this movie to range from happy to sad, to aroused to angry, from hysterical to resigned...her range seems infinitesimal and she totally made me believe that she was in the situation she portrayed. There were a couple of plot points that let her down, but this is a film not a factual record of what really happened. so there has to be some artistic licence. One thing I did enjoy was the lack of violent sex. I expected it given the circumstances, but there was no rape, no violent sexual treatment, he almost revered her in some ways. You could tell the conflict in him. It had me gripped from the moment she found herself locked in the first day and I'd definitely recommend it if you like thrillers.
jpc-19 Yes shes in a difficult situation but shes not locked in the dungeon. She has the full apartment to herself to find a way to knock out her perpetrator but only tries one attempt. She succumbs to him as a prisoner, everyone would consider it rape. If that's the case the anger should muster enough energy to take him out. The one attempt is pathetic, one minor strike which leaves him completely mobile, why not hit the leg. She doesn't even lock the door behind her to give her more time. She thinks asking a little girl, when hes close, for help makes more sense. As a lesson, its similar to a CA movie about girls meeting guys online without telling anyone. Well when she goes to his apt, she doesn't notify her mom with her good phone either where she will be. Girls/Young woman might not have the foresight to be safe when they might be in love. This might be the lesson. The ending does not redeem this movie at all.
Jeffrey Burton I had to break this movie up into three separate viewings mostly because it was lumped in with 'Funny Games' which I HATED and because I had read a deposition from the mass murderer Gary Hilton that mistakenly got posted online and then took down, in which he details the kidnapping and murder of his last victim before getting caught. I was convinced we were heading toward a bad ending. As it was it was interesting. The movie delves deeply into what happens to a victim when they are in a hopeless situation and that was very hard to watch.Teresa Palmer is EXCELLENT. She can really act and is fearless in this role to be so emotionally raw, while she's subjected to what can only be termed psychological torture. The male lead, Max Riemelt was chilling and very subtle as her sociopathic captor. There are some really beautiful shots in this as we get to see the world through Clare's eyes. It's very poignant as you know she has to be thinking her days of looking at anything are numbered. The movie successfully avoids Hollywood clichés of the captor/captive dynamic and lets you figure out what happens after the credits roll. Like I said, I couldn't get the deposition out of my mind, which contained a few events that correlated with this movie. All in all a good movie but very difficult to get through. Not light entertainment at all. Some really good acting if you can maintain your objectivity which I found hard to do.
