Justin Steiger It was hard to watch the entire movie (I did though), but holy cow what a messy plot, poor special effects and the main actors relationship felt forced. It may have just been over the top artsy (I like artsy usually) but between the scattered plot (if there really was one) and the over acted leading man, I just couldn't get into it. Sure the subject (over advertising) was clear, but it was difficult to follow along since it was all over the place.Leelee was beautiful though; she's got some good facial expressions in there (but their kid; wtf was that all about, where'd he come from and what was the point of showing him if you can't get to know him).If you intend on watching this one; grab a drink (and by drink I mean a strong one) and try to keep up or stay awake; it's rough.
andy_mcm Well, I didn't enjoy it, but if you are a fan of 1950's Hollywood B movie films, then maybe you will. I didn't think it was possible to have such rubbish effects these days and I can't decide if it was a deliberate parody or simply the result of a tiny budget.Interesting to see it reflect real life in 1980s Britain, when it was gripped by the fear of BSE, also known as Mad Cow Disease. The mawkish love story was not interesting. The idea of Lenin as the first marketing guru was a new one on me and was interesting. However, the moral was clumsy and obvious, as were the effects. The credits at the end was about the most visually attractive thing in the film. Not for me.
mnrz57 I enjoyed the movie so much because it was revealing the darkness side of businesses, advertising and marketing. But what was more interesting about the movie was the fact that marketing is not only used to sell realistic products but also to sell a political belief or ideology. All in favor of the producers and not the consumers. In fact, consumers are brainwashed. I love the last plots of the movie that shows how calm and relaxing would be if advertising and marketing is limited only to announce the product. You might think that this is a boring and cliché movie that repeats the same story that every body heard but amazingly the director managed it very well and enjoying. To me this is very good movie to see at least once to know what really goes on behind the scene.
hazysistersunshine33 This is going to be a tough one to review because I'm not sure if I completely understand it and that doesn't happen to often with me, so you know it has to be pretty complicated. It very artsy fartsy and there are a lot of messages going on in it and they don't give them to you on a silver platter. You will have to concentrate on this one and even then, good luck. It's about an advertising executive that goes way too far to sell products. It's about consumerism and how it has become an integral part of our culture. It also seems to infuse a little bit a supernatural aspects to it in the form of a ritual performed by the advertising agent where he slaughters bull. It has these cute and weird looking creatures coming out of people's bodies that look like they would be designed by a Japanese or Animae company almost. These creatures swayed you to do things for instant gratification like eating a ton of fast food and getting fat. So there is also a statement about obesity in our society. The movie makes a lot of good points and I appreciate what it's trying so say and it certainly does have a style all its own. It's not imitative of anything I've ever seen which makes it a little difficult to wrap my brain around it. My brain almost hurts trying to decipher it. I just wish it was a bit more accessible. I love the visuals. They are really funky. The only two people I recognize in it are Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Jeffrey Tambor and Max von Sydow, so it's a pretty good cast and they all do a good job. Check it out if you want a mind bending experience.
