daggersineyes What a wonderful surprise this movie was. After reading a lot of miserable, negative reviews I decided I'd give it a go anyway because nothing in the bad reviews was telling me it was boring. I approached it with caution hoping I wouldn't end up feeling like I wasted my money and time. But truth is, I liked the idea of a movie with a "low budget" feel, unsophisticated special effects, cheesy humour and even bad dialog. Sometimes they are entertaining because of all that. But it turned out to be an absolute gem! Instead of being entertained by how bad it was, I was entertained by how GOOD it was. What this director has achieved with just a teensy budget puts a lot of the big players to shame. The characters were quirky and adorable, there was actually a little bit of character development and unexpected twists in their behaviour. Cool music, wonderful camera work and direction and perhaps the biggest surprise - lots of good acting! Sure there was some hammy performances but many of the actors were REQUIRED to be hammy. The characters were drawn larger than life. They were exaggerations of the kind of characters you find in this genre all the time. The movie was deliberately parodying the stereotypes and clichés and messing around with them. I guess those negative reviewers missed the point - unfortunately for them. After I saw this movie I read a bit about how it was made and that increased my admiration for all of the people involved in it. There is a genuine warmth and a sort of joy that emanates from everyone and everything about it. It must have been awesome to work on it together - and it shows. There were so many characters I really loved I found myself hoping for a sequel!! And some of the scenes were astounding. The "makeout" scene in particular was gruesome & hilarious. I also liked the way the scenes in the graveyard were done, loved the walking torso and of course, the zombie carrying it's head around so it could see. LMAO So much to love!! Ignore the nit-pickers and people who didn't get it. It's not an Oscar winning movie. It's a well directed low budget funny horror flick. It's a barrel of fun. Watch it. You wont regret it.
MrGKB ...to the undead competition, "Dance of the Dead" marks the full-length feature debuts of a number of relative unknowns who may (or may not) be going anywhere. In a genre dominated by any number of standout efforts like "Return of the Living Dead," "Shaun of the Dead," "Fido," and "Zombieland," it really takes something special to transcend mere competence in film-making. Sadly, "Dance..." doesn't quite do that, although I give it a few points for the attempt. As is usually the case, it's the tyro script that keeps this one in the realm of the mundane. After a somewhat promising opening, way too much time is spent introducing the principal characters, none of whom are overly interesting (with the possible exception of the criminally underused Gravedigger), and establishing the tone of the proceedings, which promises comedy but fails to consistently deliver. The slim plot that ensues is distressingly banal, centering on the usual hijinks of recognizing the situation, surviving it, and the eventual efforts to save a prom from zombiedom. None of it is unique or terribly entertaining, sorry to say. Perhaps the greatest fault is the hodgepodge of zombie tropes that refuse to mesh throughout the film: sometimes they're slow, sometimes they're fast, sometimes they literally vault from the grave! And then there's just pure silliness like zombies that can drive cars, or carry their severed head around, or are pacified by music. The make-up and fx range from good to slipshod, but nothing stands out as memorable; set pieces veer from the slapstick of a bodiless pair of zombie legs staggering away to straight-up Romero-style grue and disembowelment, but none of it is scary or suspenseful or even particularly disturbing. There's no tension in the film at all, mostly due to characters painted in broad strokes, leaving the viewer no reason to care about them.Basically, "Dance..." brings nothing new to the table, and that condemns it to the disease of boredom. One positive note I have to give it is that the young cast, by and large, actually appears to be the right age for their high school characters. That's just about the only unusual thing in the whole film.Ho-hum DVD viewing that I'm glad I copped at the library. A short piece done by the director in college shows more promise than the feature film can live up to.
labzy_1692 'wrong turn' deteriorated with each movie and so did 'the hills have eyes'...now being a horror fan I wouldn't lie that I had similar expectations with this one...after 'land of the dead' and 'day of the dead'...who'd ever like to watch a movie named 'dance of the dead'? I downloaded it and was proved wrong....though the humor intended could got a little crappy and predictable at some occasions and the acting sometimes sucked...the movie overall was a good one...the plot is simple...and happens in every other zombie movie you see...the story of survival of a group of people surrounded by people changing into zombies and a hidden love story amidst it.HOwever, this wasn't as lame as it could have been...it was fun to watch and surely relieved my head a little from all the piling tension of work and study...a definite 7/10.
amorgenthaler As a lover of horror movies i have to say that this one is one of the worst i have ever seen; which, being an understatement considering that words can not describe the terrible effects, abhorrent acting, and the offensive depiction of what would happen if a nuclear reactor were to melt down next to a graveyard. Zombies sprinting faster then Usain Bolt on crack clearly says the the makers of this film were not only the cause of WWII but also the inspiration for Hitler and the German army. If you ever consider watching this film shoot yourself in the brain and get rejected at the heavenly gates for even thinking about such a film to watch with a girl on a Saturday night. 1) You need to get laid and 2) your girl friend will cheat on you if you even expose her to the shi*tiness of this film. Thank you cast and crew of this poorly made cinema, you let down not only the human race but Jesus and his family as well. Give yourselves around of applause because you have just reached the same level as Rebecca Black's Friday.
