Seth_Rogue_One Faults is a movie that doesn't really fit into a specific genre, but it has elements of dark comedy, drama and a bit of mystery while being set more as a character study piece.Great performances all around with Leland Orsher and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who I will definitely be looking forward seeing more from) in the 2 leads. It's about a man (Orsher) who's a specialist on cults and mind-control who's asked to revert a cult-member's mind (Winstead) to a 'normal' way of thinking.More part of the movie takes place in one setting but it never gets boring as the characters are rich and interesting.
sol- Hired to deprogram a young woman who has fallen victim to an abusive cult, an expert in mind control techniques starts to question whether or not there is actually some value to her cult in this curious independent film. From the outset, the movie seems like a contemporary updating of the likes of 'Split Image' and 'Ticket to Heaven' -- two sensational films from the early 1980s about rescuing youths from religious cults -- but the results here are decidedly different as the film ends up as anything but a straight drama. There are elements of comedy, drama, mystery, thriller, horror and even fantasy throughout, and while all this genre-hopping is sometimes detrimental (none of the comedy really works and the scenes with the protagonist's publisher and his hired goon do not quite fit in) for the most part, the multi-genre style renders the film a perfectly unsettling experience. As a viewer, we never feel entirely in control, placed on the exact same level as the protagonist with all his doubts and insecurities. Speaking of which, Leland Orser is excellent in the role. While he initially seems money-grubbing and pathetic, he gradually becomes a sympathetic lonely soul for whom the world seems to have turned against. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (best known as McClane's daughter in the 'Die Hard' series) is also superb as the young cultist. As for the rest of the film, it is best viewed with minimal plot expectations. Suffice it to say though, the ending is endlessly creepy and for a film that is not overtly horror, the chill that 'Faults' sends down the spine is incredible.
MartinHafer So far, "Fault" has all positive reviews on IMDb. I cannot imagine this will continue now that it's just debuted on Netflix's streaming service here in the States. I found the film disturbing and unpleasant. When the movie starts, it's a comedy. A complete loser named Ansel (Leland Orser) is doing crappy workshops where he talks about cults and cult deprogramming. He's darkly funny to watch and I enjoyed the film...so far.The plot then thickens. A set of parents inexplicably recruit this idiot to deprogram their daughter who's been caught up in a cult called "Fault". He and some recruits kidnap her and take her to a motel room....and the comedy completely vanishes. The film becomes confusing here, as you really have no idea where it's going. Ultimately, the film becomes VERY dark and nasty...and I was left feeling like two separate films had been spliced together. And, as a result I also felt cheated. A funny dark comedy just became dark and nasty...and unfun to say the least.
michaelriffone I have been a huge IMDb fan since 1998, and this is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review, so don't expect any literary accomplishment. Faults is in a word "original". I have always been fascinated by Cults ever since I was 10 years old and the Jonestown massacre so saturated the media that not even a young tyke like myself could avoid the story. Leland Orser plays an expert on debunking cults, who has fallen on very hard times. He is hired by the parents of a young girl who has been taken in by a religious cult. From there this story goes anywhere except where you think it will.I highly recommend this to anyone who is tired of tired plots. At just under 90 mins, what do you have to lose? Check this out and enjoy!!!
