Ninochka I really cannot understand why people compare it with Tremors or Jaws. Even for B-movie lovers as me and my family, Frankenfish is a disaster. It's very slow moving, boring and illogical. The voodoo sorcerer could have been interesting, but after all she actually did not play any meaningful role in the movie, and the audience is not sure if she really could protect people from the Frankenfishes or it was just what she believed she was able to do. Why the fishes are "made (= bred) in China" is not clear, either. The mad gun-lover and the need to come to another house without touching the ground / water are taken from Tremors, but here all this looks very far-fetched. Even Carnosaur 3 was much, much better. The jumping man-eating fishes are quite OK, but I would like more fish and less talk.
miami1925 Frankenfish is probably one of syfy's worst movies to date. There is absolutely no plot what so ever, except for the "mutant fish killing people" if that can be considered a plot. A man is found horribly mutilated, investigators are sent in, and are killed off one by one. Most within a 20 min time period. The filming is mostly in the dark and makes it hard to see everything, especially the few shots of the fish in the water, it looks mostly like a blob. Also, most of the main characters are killed randomly and very quickly in one or two scenes. The characters are very poorly developed as well. The fish themselves are never filmed for more than 5 seconds, due to the horrible special effects. Just another Syfy creature feature (I created a profile JUST to review this movie, if that tells you anything)
Michael_Elliott Frankenfish (2004) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Mildly entertaining horror film takes place in the swamps of Louisiana where dead bodies are beginning to pile up. Not only are the bodies dead but they are strangely mutilated and it turns out that a huge, man-made fish is the bad guy. You might think this is just another rip off of Jaws and it is in a way but it's certainly more entertaining than a lot of the rips out there. The film might not be original in its story but it does offer up some original things and that includes having a black man play the lead, which normally doesn't happen in a film like this. Tory Kittles does a very good job in his role and certainly delivers the best performance in the film. The low budget nature of the film is actually a good thing as it makes the settings feel all the more real and it also builds up some nice atmosphere. The CGI fish is pretty fake looking but it's not too bad and it's certainly far from the worst thing I've seen in these types of movies. If you're after gore then this film offers a lot of that includes various decapitations, which let the red stuff go crazy. The plot really doesn't make any sense but the fish has something to do with a gangster but none of the dialogue makes it too clear about what's going on. If you don't enjoy B movies then you'll certainly hate this one but if you are a fan then this film offers enough to keep you entertained.
cat-that-goes-by-himself Oh come on you whiners, grow up ! This movie has a big B written all over. What is the point comparing it to first rate blockbusters ? If one takes it for what it really is, one gets a hour and a half of very decent entertainment. So instead of stating the obvious (cheesy script, second-rate acting, low budget sfx, etc), I'll try to summarize what made this flick worth watching IMHO:a bunch of picturesque bayou weirdos (especially the white rasta crack-head and shell-shocked viet vet) pretty good creature design and animation a couple of imaginative death scenes amusing means of getting rid of the nasty critters as it has been already pointed out, black heroes a pace that (barely, but still) allows the action to stay ahead of plot inconsistencies decent comic relief character good lighting and general image qualityAll in all, a very decent B movie.
