johnm-38132 OK...I'm gay and have been for 57 years. Up till now there haven't been many films made for gay guys except gay porn. We did break new ground in "Brokeback" in 2006, but then nothing. In "Brokeback", we had two mature, masculine, attractive, "normal" gay men involved in a romance with each other. But, the ending, unlike most hetero romance dramas, ended sadly. It was a guilt inspiring ending. See what all you straights do to gay guys. You force them to live lies. It wasn't a movie written primarily for a gay audience because gay people, not unlike straight people, want to see positive characters and happy endings. In "FREE FALL", the German gay romance made in 2013, we have similar characters we saw in "Brokeback", masculine, attractive, mature, "normal" seeming gay men. Unlike "Brokeback" we see that one character, who is struggling with his sexuality, is actually evolving before our very eyes. He's coming to terms with his gayness, which opens the way for a satisfying sequel with a happy ending - because unlike "Brokeback", both characters are still alive at the end.
George Jones This film expertly reels you into the life of a man who is confused about himself. Unusually with gay films I really felt a sense of understanding with the main character, he is afraid of losing everything he has built on the risk that is Kay. However we know and he knows, that Kay is the man who he really loves. We can see the contrast in Marc's life when he's with Kay. He is happier, more carefree and sensitive. This is beautifully shown in the more intimate scenes of the film that succeed in portraying the true love in their relationship.I must admit the ending left me craving for more, however I think this shows that the film was good if it made me really care about what happens to the characters. I gladly await the sequel!
billy_dana I'm shattered in all the right ways by this film. First-class acting by the lead characters, brilliant story-writing (want to meet this screen/story writer!), outstanding directing, beautiful filming - I run out of adjectives with which to praise this film.People have compared it to "Brokeback Mountain", but I think that's a mistake. There is loss here, but there is also an enormous amount of growth. The symbolic use of our lead character's breathing challenges at the start of the film contrasted with his loose and easy breathing in the last scene is a perfect representation of the arc of the story. Loss, but clarity and wisdom as well in this film.I watch an enormous amount of gay film, and this ranks easily in the top five films I've ever, ever seen in this genre. And it would be unfair to limit this to a gay audience - like Brokeback (in this respect) it is a story for a much larger audience. Some great examination of relationship, self-honesty, the challenge of being attracted (or even in love) with more than one person - some wonderful themes in this movie.Must-see - end of story.
Angela This film is beyond words beautiful. The rawness and connection between these two actors and their characters is beyond beautiful. I must admit I've watched this movie over six times and I fall in love with it each and every time there is not one part I don't like. It's a real drama and part of me wishes that Kay would have been apart of Marc's life forever ...but it tore me apart and yes I criedMost films now a days lack originality and they lack some real connection between characters. You could see the relationship between Marc and his girlfriend but you could also see the social norms and expectations for how you were supposed to love in this film. Kay was not the social expectation , but you knew that deep down inside Marc loved Kay, the difference was that Kay didn't let people control him and control his life. However Marc was controlled by people around him which made it difficult to accept the fact of his feelings for this man. Its so real and raw which makes it beautiful . like even when he was trying to rationalize he wasn't gay, that had nothing to do with it, you really can't help who you fall in love with.
