sargle I love watching true story haunting movies and after reading a write up on this movie and reading the history of the house, I was eager to watch it but I was very disappointed, In my opinion it is a total waste of time and money, not only for me but the actual movie itself. The acting was so lame a group of normal people could have done better. And after watching the whole movie I cannot for the life of me figure out where they got the story from considering it is supposed to be a true story. If anyone can figure out how they got the story I would be interested to hear from them.I would also go as far to say that is the worst movie I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of movies in my time as I am no spring chicken.
mysticnox The acting is so so, the special fx are actually pretty good for what they are, and there are a few places that were actually scary. My biggest problem is the little girl. Annie, I think her name is. The constant crying "mommy, daddy". Seriously? The girl that played this kid is 13 when this movie is made. No 13 year old child calls their parents "mommy" and "daddy". Its mom and dad. She sounded like a 6 year old. Especially in 2009.As for the house, I doubt they were able to film there even though the outside shots showed it. The pictures were kind of cool. Wish it had explained more of the history and stuff thats supposed to happen there.
karllacey1 OK this plot had more holes in it than swiss cheese...the effects were lowsy, the storyline was awful - but it did have something and I will explain at the end. The acting When the Fedex girl arrived, the acting was OK; then there was the first lady introduced an English actress and here acting was terrible, and from thereonin, the acting went downhill especially the wooden guy. He was the worst of a bad bunch of actingCasting Now there are 3 main characters, the mother who looked maybe 27 tops, the father would could have gotten away with 30 tops; then the daughter who looked like she was maybe 13-15 but switched from being a teenager into the mommy mommy thing. I think she was supposed to be about 8 years old and anyone with a pair of eyes could see that she was NOT 8 years old. Inconsistencies The father actually coughed up blood a few times because he had acquired TB; where no one knows??? And then he was fine the next minute; then he wasn't - was he sick or not ?? and more to the point; if he was dead (spoiler sorry) then how would he get sick ??? Quite often he would cough up blood, then the shot would go onto his wife, then back to him and hey presto no blood. Anyone editing crew who watched this movie should be ashamed, hell I felt ashame for them. Scary? Absolutely not, the majority of scary moments came when one of the main cast was looking at the camera and someone would walk behing them in the distance - which is OK once, alright twice, three times? four ? man it happened about twenty times. The end The end was OK actually; not for the reasons you probably think, but the storyline picked up towards the end despite everything else being awful. I am guessing the writer wrote the end of the film then thought 'hey that's a great ending...how do we get there?' Now I have absolutely ripped this movie to pieces because it is truly truly a huge piece of garbage, how can I convince anyone to watch this movie? Well I can't really but if you switch your mindset from this being a horror movie to a comedy; you will have a real laugh. I was going to turn this off, but my wife said comon let's watch it because she was laughing like crazy. So I did and I got what she was laughing at and that was it, we spent the rest of the time pulling the movie to piece making fun of it. That was the most enjoyable part. On a footnote, it also comes in 3D! on DVD....I watched the 2D version and I cannot say I will be watching the 3D format. In summary, I am struggling to find a worse movie..
OllieSuave-007 With all the horror movies made in the USA involving a haunted house, you would think one that features one of the most famous haunted places in the world (Winchester Mystery House in San Nose, CA) would feature a unique and compelling story. However, this film fails to deliver that notion and instead is a campy, low-budget, and unoriginal movie. This film was Winchester in name only, elaborating very little on the real-life Winchester Mystery House. Sarah Winchester, the heiress who kept construction on the house going non-stop for 38 years to appease the spirits of those killed by the Winchester firearms, was portrayed as just a lost soul looking for her long lost daughter (why she could not find her daughter in her own darn house is beyond me). There was no effort in elaborating the history behind Sarah Winchester nor the many different rooms, secret chambers, doors and hallways in the house. If you're going to have the Winchester Mystery House portrayed in a film, at least make the characters explore the many different and eerie aspects of the house like the staircase that leads up to the ceiling, door to nowhere, the séance room, Winchester's bedroom, the garden, the 7-11 staircase, emphasis of the number 13, etc. Also, make the effort of having the house located in a city like in real life, rather than sequestered in the woods. Detailing and emphasizing the history and mystery of the house will make the film more unique and original. Instead, the lack thereof makes the film dull and stands out as just another low-budget, ghost-on-the-loose horror flick.Lastly, the acting is absolutely horrible - lack of substance, emotion, depth and drama. It looked as if the actors were ill-prepared for their roles and made very little effort in portraying their characters. I had to cover my eyes a few times just because the acting was so terrible. I have to single out the actress who played "Susan Grenier." I think she is the worse actor in the film who, at times, tries too hard to be realistic (i.e., forcing out tears when she cries).Overall, if you're bored and looking for a good horror movie to pass the time (like I was), you might be better off choosing to watch something else!
