dana-charter I'll be the first to admit that when the first Hot Tub Time Machine came out in 2010, I had no interest in seeing the movie. Thankfully, one of my fellow Marines convinced me to see the movie. The high jinks of Lou (Rob Corddry) and Nick (Craig Robinson) had me constantly laughing while trying to save Jacob (Clark Duke) and return to the present. All the while, Adam (John Cusack) is trying to avoid being stabbed with a fork and falling in love with April (Lizzy Caplan).Fast forward to today and I went to see the almost formulaic sequel, Hot Tub Time Machine 2. And while "formulaic sequel" might immediately send up a red flag, I feel this movie hit on most of the comedic points that I liked about the first one. Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson have 'it' when it comes to on screen comedic chemistry. The constant back and forth rarely misses and continues right where they left off in the original.Who can forget this classic moment? Who can forget this classic moment? With John Cusack not figuring to be a big part of the sequel, it was left to Clark Duke to fill his shoes, which I feel he did quite well. If there is one real weak point in the cast to me it was the addition of Adam Scott as Adam Jr. He just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the cast and for the most part was playing the unfunny guy role left open by John Cusack.Overall, if you are a fan of the type of humor that you saw in the first one, especially the bits involving Rob and Craig, then go see this movie. Don't try to make sense of the movie and the generous portions of plot holes typical of movies involving time travel, such as The Terminator. Just grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the fun.One word of note though, if you have seen the trailer, it is slightly misleading in some aspects. I hate when movies do this, but again, it is only slightly misleading as they do deliver it at the very end.
Argemaluco I found Hot Tub Time Machine an entertaining comedy with an intentionally absurd premise which handled the classic travel in time concept with geniality. There wasn't too much need to continue the story, but that has never stopped Hollywood, so we now have Hot Tub Time Machine 2, from the same director, the same screenwriter and almost all the original cast. Unfortunately, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 feels incredibly tedious, committing the classic mistake of inflating the narrative with antipathetic tangents and big doses of vulgarity and shamelessness, but without offering us a substantial characters development or reminding us why we once found them likable. And the least I say about the twists, "surprises" and paradoxes which integrate the screenplay, the better; screenwriter Josh Heald obviously aspired to reach the amusing complications from the Back to the Future saga, but he absolutely failed on that. It's a pity, because Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Rob Corddry deserve much better material than this, and I hope this piece of junk doesn't damage their opportunities to headline better projects. Or at least, projects in which they don't have to seek refuge in disgusting routines designed to stretch the running time of the film, and convince us that "transgressive" humor is funny only due to its vulgarity. That might be so in a parallel universe; but in the one I watched Hot Tub Time Machine 2, it's just pathetic.
leonblackwood Review: What a total waste of time! The plot was completely ridiculous and extremely confusing and the acting was really bad, especially from the annoying Rob Corddry who went a bit to far with the comedy. The first movie in this franchise had some meaning behind it but this one is a complete joke. Basically, if you have seen the first movie then you will know that these 3 guys, Nick (Craig Robinson), Jacob (Clark Duke) and Lou (Rob Corddry) have a hot tub that can go back and forth in time. Rob has become a rock star and Nick has become famous from taking famous songs from the future and releasing them in the past. Jacob just ends up working for Lou in his mansion as a servant, for some unknown reason and after one of Lou massive parties, someone in the crowd shoots him in his dick so they use the time machine to save his life. They mistakingly end up in the future and from there, I haven't got a clue what was going on. Whoever wrote this movie really needs to get sacked because the script was awful. The whole virtual sex thing was really bad writing and I can't imagine anyone finding it funny at all. I personally lost interest in the film after the first 5 minutes and I'm not surprised that John Cusack didn't come back for this badly made sequel. Awful!Round-Up: I usually don't mind Craig Robinsons humour but he really was chatting some rubbish in this film. We don't get a lot of American TV series in the UK so I've missed a lot of his work but I liked him in Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, Zack & Miri Make A Porno, This Is The End and the Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. I didn't particular like his performance in this movie, mainly because of a badly written script but he wasn't bad in the first movie of this franchise. The same director who made the first movie in this franchise, Steve Pink, also made Accepted, About Last Night and a couple of TV series. I definitely don't find his type of humour that funny and it looks like most people rushed to the cinema to see the second movie because the first one wasn't that bad. Anyway, I'm really struggling to find something positive to say about the movie so I think you can tell that I won't be rushing to the cinema to see the 3rd outing starring these three misfits.Budget: $14million Worldwide Gross: $13millionI recommend this movie to people who are into their comedy/sci-fi movies about three friends who can travel back and forth in time in there hot tub. 1/10
Bryan Kluger With the success of the 'Hot Tub Time Machine', both critically and financially, it made sense to make a sequel. Well that time has come and original director and writer Steve Pink and Josh Heald have conjured up more or less a similar story, but this time with more gross out humor and less 80's pop culture references. Instead of going back in time, the gang minus John Cusack jumps in the tub and end up in the year 2025 in New Orleans, where it looks more like 2015 with the exception of pets flying on hover boards and automobiles acting like humans. It's fairly difficult these days to make something fresh and original in the time-travel genre. More often than not, it's the same thing we've seen over and over, with a few exceptions. And as a young Jacob (Clark Duke) tries to explain to Lou (Rob Corddry) and Nick (Craig Robinson) why they are in an alternate timeline of 2025, Nick can only compare things to 'The Terminator' or 'Looper'. If you try to in the least bit to understand the time travel equations or aspects that 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2' is trying to convey, you might have an aneurysm. The best case scenario is that you go into this with an open mind and laugh at all the raunchy jokes and hilarious improv these actors deliver. Make no mistake, you'll leave with sore cheeks from laughing so hard. Heald and Pink give us a montage of what's been going on with our characters since the first film. Lou has become even more of a dick since the first film and has single handedly crashed and burned his company 'Lougle', whereas Nick has continued to "write" hit songs and make tons of money. As for Jacob (the supposed smart one of the group), he has literally done nothing with his life, besides watch television and become the brunt of abuse from his dad Lou.During a party for Lou, a mystery person shoots Lou's dick off with a shotgun, where Lou, Nick, and Jacob jump into the hot tub again (a quick explanation is given as to why Lou has the hot tub) and are transported to the year 2025 to save Lou's life. I know, how could Lou be alive and have his man parts in tact in the future, when we clearly see them blown to bits in the past. It's all loosely explained as an alternate timeline, but again, try no to think about it too much. So now the three men must try and find and stop Lou's killer.Corrdy explained in an interview recently that this type of film wasn't John Cusack's affinity, which is why he probably wasn't in the film, although he is mentioned quite a bit. In this alternate time line, Pink and Heald did a good job of replacing Cusack with Adam Scott, who plays Cusack's character's son. It's quite fun as Adam Scott fully commits with his warm almond milk and man skirt. These four guys riff off each other perfectly, and as seasoned comedians, always deliver each joke with perfect timing.Perhaps the highlight of the film is a Christian Slater hosted reality show called 'Choozy Doozy', where anal rape is common. Instead of a fairly cohesive story like we had in the first film, Pink and Heald decided to put a bunch of raunchy and vulgar scenes together to gain more laughs and gross out moments, than a fluid story. But the camaraderie of these four guys and their funny jokes definitely keep this film from being the big stinker it could have been. But luckily for you and I, 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2' delivers the laughs often, even if many things don't make sense or play out.
