makiprettywoman3 This is a movie that does deal with some serious issues. Some people can have serious mental problems. In this movie I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK you have a woman in this mental hospital who thinks she is a combat cyborg. Since she is cyborg she won't eat food so instead she licks batteries. Parts of the movie are really strange. She ends up eventually falling in love with another man who thinks he can steal people souls. There are some really funny moments like when the woman tries to talk to a vending machine. They have a few scenes that show how crazy the grandmother was. She thought she was a rat and she would eat radishes all day. You begin to like all the characters even though they do have some flaws. I haven't seen many Korean Movies. You can currently stream this movie on netflix and it's a good movie to watch.
Jonny_B_Lately First, I want to readily acknowledge that long-time fans of director Park's works hated this film. It was nothing like "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "Oldboy," or "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" and that is understandable. This is a very different film. But it is clear from box- office receipts that this was a flop as far as Park's country-men were concerned; they hated it too.WARNING: SPOILERS PRESENT! Young-goon (played by Lim Su-jeong) has lost her sanity. While assembling a radio in a factory she imagines that the assembly instructions coming from loudspeakers are telling her to open her wrist, insert house current wires, and plug herself into an outlet so she can recharge. She thinks she's a cyborg and her mission in "life" is to avenge her grandmother's commitment to an asylum for Alzheimer's victims. Once committed to her own asylum she refuses to eat. The staff do not understand this, but from Young-goon's perspective it makes perfect sense; she has to recharge not eat. After all she often tells the staff "I'm not a psycho: I'm a cyborg."Naturally this is a delusion, but a very complete one and since she's convinced that she is a cyborg she feels no obligation to explain her reasoning to the staff, instead preferring to converse with vending machines, radios, and light fixtures. Il-soon (played by Rain), another inmate, is a known theft of quirks, attributes, and ailments. He is often asked by other inmates to steal their insecurities or the very social quirks that got them committed in the first place. Apparently he is very effective as the inmates that have asked for his help improve mentally. Young-soon learns of this and convinces him to steal her "sympathy" (a cyborg sin) so she can effectively gun down the staff of the asylum.Of course Young-soon's "hunger-strike" is killing her and fellow inmate, Il-soon, manages to convince her that he has created a "rice megatron" that converts eaten rice directly into electricity. Once he "installs" this in her back she feels free to eat and her health improves.Of course the staff is grateful, but they don't really understand what he did or how he did it.The story is told with such care and humility that you can't help but love the characters, feel complete sympathy for them, and relate fully with them even though they are clearly not in full possession of their mental faculties. Park has deftly treated the subject of mental aberration with care.As should be expected of a Park film, the delusions of violence against the staff are blood drenched gore. After all, Young-soon as a cyborg, once her sympathy is stolen, she is a highly effective killing machine. As a love story it is very different. It is not about sex; it is, instead, a story of care and compassion for one's fellow human being.I predict that in the coming decades this will be seen as Park Chan- wook's finest film. Much like Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" was widely panned when released, but is now one of the few films he is remembered for.
ajs-10 I had never heard of this South Korean film before and I was pleasantly surprised by it. I found it very charming with some great subtle use of CGI to illustrate the inner thoughts of the main characters. I know there are a few out there that fear the subtitle and for those I'm afraid your worst fears may be realised… It does have subtitles. For me, not usually a problem, but I did struggle to follow the plot at the beginning, it soon settled down though and easy reading from then on. I'll give you my thoughts after this brief summary.Young woman, Cha Young-goon has been sent to a mental institution. Her grandmother had been sent into care sometime earlier and, it seems, this had tipped her over the edge. She keeps it a secret, but she believes she is a Cyborg and she has to rescue her grandmother. In order to do that though, she must relieve herself of all thoughtfulness, sympathy…etc. She is befriended by Park Il-sun, another patient who has a habit of stealing things. The staff becomes worried about Young-goon when she refuses to eat. They lock her away but Il-sun has fallen in love with her and may be able to help her. I will leave it there or the Spoiler Police will be fitting cybernetic implants to me (again).I love the subtle use of CGI in this film, you can tell a lot of hard work and imagination has been applied to make it look so good. It's a film full of interesting characters and great performances, but the two that stood out were Su-jeong Lim as Cha Young-goon and Rain as Park Il-sun. Both were really excellent, particularly Su-jeong Lim, her performance was quite stunning. This is a very engaging and charming film with lots of subtle plot twists that keep the audience guessing. It is essentially a love story, but one with a difference and one that (I hope) others will enjoy as much as I did. Great acting, great direction and great production, although it's not altogether perfect; I've already mentioned the slightly confusing beginning; I still enjoyed it very much though. It's another of a growing number of South Korean films I am discovering and long may it continue… Recommended. My score: 7.7/10.IMDb Score: 7.0/10 (based on 8,808 votes at the time of going to press).Rotten Tomatoes 'Tomatometer' Score: 90/100 (based on 10 reviews counted at the time of going to press).Rotten Tomatoes 'Audience' Score: 80/100 (based on 11,824 user ratings counted at the time of going to press).
iller1234 Ill try to somehow review this in short although im one of the persons who is mindblowed by this movie.Sure im biased to like Chan-wook Parks movies since i could laugh at about any scene with his simple but spot on dialogues and tiny hints of humor. I'm a cyborg, but that's OK is however very different from Oldboy or any of the sympathy trilogy movies. It has what Hollywood lacks, no clues and great depth as opposed to a great deal of clues with no depth. To make a long story short, if the maincharacter needs to take a pee, she doesn't first consult with the camera so that the viewer is sure to understand what is going on. Now this to some can be a big drawback, why i believe the overall score on IMDb is relatively low. So beware if you aren't interested in any of the psychological, spiritual or philosophical thoughts that the movie is offering, because it is packed full.Cha Young-goon, the main character played by Su-jeong Lim is experiencing a big trauma in her youth and - perhaps - copes by 'becoming' a cyborg (You could guess her inspiration comes from her grandma - the rat) and with it comes some guidelines, the Sins. sympathy, feeling guilty and useless daydreaming are some of them. These becomes her obstacles in her path to rid the earth of the whiteuns - her caretakers on the mental hospital. There you have it. Now you do get clues as to why she wants to go on a killing spree but i wont include spoilers here. The soundtrack is well-timed and good. The acting from just about any in the cast are great. They don't have easy characters to portrait and you would think they had many pointers and clues as how to interpret them because they feel very authentic. The patients all have some kind of psychological disorder, everything from only being able to walk backwards to having the ability to steal peoples characteristics. Therein lies much of the humor. From outside they look disoriented and in chaos, but Chan-wook takes us on a fascinating journey inside their heads. The patients all seem to understand each other on another level than the caretakers do and it is beautiful to watch. The movie jumps from being funny to deep to emotional over and over again and im left totally drained out at the end of the movie. It doesn't matter that the ending is abrupt, if you feel like me, you want to watch it again and again to pick up on things you missed and to go through the emotions all over again.I will have to be bold and say that although Oldboy is not far behind, this is the best from Chan-wook Park and hence one of the best movies period.
