Havana is infected by zombies! A group of unlikely heroes fights back. JUAN OF THE DEAD is a zombie flick with a distinctly Cuban twist, making fun of stereotypes surrounding the attitude of the country's people, as well as the political situation. The Cuban aspect is, to me, what makes this movie stand out from many other zombie comedies. Unfortunately, I have a problem with sluggish and lazy heroes... because they usually make for slow plots that just trod along without an inherent goal or a sense of conflict. Moreover, if your heroes don't seem to feel fear, then the audience doesn't usually feel it either. The movie's demise is its lack of purpose, with a story that only cares about creating opportunities for jokes.Lovers of the Z genre will like some of the depictions of the devastated streets, which are pretty darn cool. The gore factor is moderate with some CGI, as well some practical effects. A few deaths are hilarious but other than that the movie focuses on jokes and its (relatively lovable) characters. This movie has a heart, but it's bogged down by its lack of a good script and a genuine sense of suspense.

Totally worth a watch.Just watched Juan of the dead and enjoyed this zombie-com with its tongue in cheek. the laughs are original in the fact this isn't trying to spoof other films to shows but the genre itself. From Juan setting up the business with a tag line "we kill your loved ones" or the muscle man who feints at the sight of blood or the army "rescue" that's fails on every level. So much better than walking with the dead. Also this film has one of the best mass zombie slaying scenes I've ever seen, reminds me of the mirror ball scene in from dusk til dawn.Watch and enjoy this little Cuban gem.

This is the first Cuban film I have seen, and one of my new favorite Zombie comedies. With the modern horror genera over saturated with underwhelming living dead films they have become easy to ignore. Pictures are produced cheaper these days with high definition video and consumer grade CGI. I have seen countless cookie cutter films on this production level that are nothing more than bored actors reciting a terrible script. Juan De Los Muertos has everything these movies lack, most important of which is heart. The comedy ranges from Three Stooges slapstick to Kevin Smith toilet humor. Nothing is sacred. If not for the fact that this film presents nothing in a serious manner, it would be downright offensive. Possessing a morbid sense of humor does help, but it is not a necessity. Each character is quirky, unique, and fun. Even the most psychologically damaged are still likable. A few of them are sh!tty people who you still want to survive. I would liken it to throwing the characters of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, or East Bound and Down's Kenny Powers into a zombie apocalypse. The practical effects are fantastic, and reminiscent of classic zombie films. The CGI, however, ranges from OK to terrible. Though, since the film's primary goal is to illicit laughter rather than dazzle you with special effects, the digital shortcomings of Juan De Los Muertos are of little consequence. There are some inventive sight gags at work that are not only original, but so damn funny that the cheesiness of the CGI does no harm. In fact, at times it ramps up the comedy, kicks seriousness in the pants, and keeps the tone ever fun. This review was intentionally spoiler free. That was hard, because I really want to spread word of all the amazing things to be had in this film. However, I would do more justice to the film, and potential fans by not ruining anything. There are some awesome surprises. I mean it. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loved Shaun of the Dead, Biozombie, or Peter Jackson's Dead Alive/Brain Dead. Viva Juan De Los Muertos!!!

the characters are good, the gore/kills are all good, they use different cool weapons but the movie is still missing that something it needs to become a good movie. I don't feel it was a waist of time or that it is a bad movie it just didn't quite do it for me. There is lots of tongue and cheek humour and a couple memorable moments but it never really made me laugh out loud or have anything over the top cool (the under water zombies were pretty cool though). It was kind of stupid humour but not quite crude enough for adults so it seems kind of lame. juan of the dead was OK and I could see if there are people out there who would enjoy it more than I did.
