Andrew Fletcher I'll be honest when I say that I've never been a massive fan of Mrs Brown's Boys. That includes the television series & live shows, but that did not determine my rating for the film adaptation. I do respect and appreciate why people would enjoy the series though, it simply isn't my type of humour.Saying that, as a film fan, I feel insulted when people decide to cash-in on a successful formula to bring something to the big screen. Fans of the show would obviously attend a viewing, but the film adaptation is everything that the series isn't. The two couldn't be further apart on the spectrum from one another. The film has very little structure and constantly jumps from one scene to the next. The writing seems rather lacklustre and there are more awkward silences than laugh-out-loud moments. It's clear that the writers have attempted to create a storyline structure to accommodate the demands of a feature length film, but it unfortunately hasn't worked in my opinion. At 70 minutes, the entire feature seems rushed and forced. Horrible gag after horrible gag, it falls short of the expectations of its fans. I'm not one of those individuals, like I've stated, but if you haven't had the opportunity to watch this but want too, please, for your own sake and sanity, don't.
David Williams I have enjoyed the TV Show & live DVD's so I am not reviewing this as a hater of the Mrs. Brown's Boys Franchise. I didn't see it in the cinema but just bought the DVD to satisfy my curiosity. What I witnessed was one of the worse attempts at a movie I have ever seen. It is unfunny & an attempt at a plot to carry this for an hour and a half is invisible. Even the reusing of old jokes which has been Brendan O'Carrolls trademark for years couldn't lift this off the bottom of the septic tank it sits in. Brendan himself is very sharp & very funny as a comedian & in a live situation is hilarious. But he obviously wrote down all the jokes he heard in school & dusts them off oh too often. Only his sister Eilish who plays Winnie can claim she put in a decent shift in this. Delivery of the weak punchlines was slow & poor throughout & mistaking a Pakistani man for a Jamaican might be slightly funny the first time. Blind Ninjas & O'Carrolls attempt at what I assume was a Chinese man were embarrassing. We pretended to be Chinamen in school Brendan... snap out of it! Brendan O'Carroll has taken this recycling thing too far & whoever said in the trailer that 'it's the funniest film this year' was either well paid or has only seen one film this year! Avoid the movie but watch the live show.
videorama-759-859391 Popular t.v. comedies aren't known to have reputable success. As with this one, sadly, it enormously fails, where laughs are scarce. The script has to thank for that too, where as a movie, we see the material's been restricted, where we're missing a lot "feckin'" words or vulgarities, what have you, where at times, I honestly was in a stupor. I don't know they couldn't just stick to their guns, where the movie, then would of warranted a MA rating, but it would be a lot of better than this disappointing film. What were the highlights, was the start with that brilliantly choreographed number, and song, where all the old lassies got out their prams, where at last we get to see Brown suburbia, which was pretty. The plot of course was so stereotypical of these t.v. sitcoms to film, with good versus bad. Some big guns, are trying to close down the market stalls, and guess who won't sell hers. We really have some big chunks of zero humor where as a Brown's fan, you will see. There were actually times when watching this, I was crying out for the series, to cure my despondence. We learn too a bit of shock truth about Mrs Brown's history, that really put a no spin on the movie.
FlashCallahan So the titular character owes €3.8 million in taxes, and has to pay it or her livelihood will be taken away. That's the story. Other sub lots involve the Russian Mafia, Racism. Blind Ninjas, Sexism, breaking the fourth wall on several occasions, and then pretending to do an outtake halfway through the film, because hey, a lot of the people who watch this abomination on TV wouldn't know what good comedy was even if they were visited by The Spanish Inquisition....And truth be told, its terrible, from beginning to end, its cringeworthy stuff, and as soon as the titular character turns over and broke wind at the beginning, just confirmed the shameful, lazy writing that this thing has.The breaking of the fourth wall is awful, but the worse thing that this film has, are the silly out takes that we get 'treated to' in the second act, its clear that they are staged. All in all, yes, it's made a shedload of money, but that doesn't mean that many people liked it.Come the end of the film, I saw Keith Duffy, and realised I wasn't actually watching the film, I was just looking at the screen, bored senseless.Do not treat your 'mammy' to this, this Christmas, as all the advertising will no doubt say.A poisonous cash in, stopping people seeing something decent at the cinema.
