sbundy-2 What is wrong with this epic piece of garbage? It would be easier to tell you what's right, which is NOTHING.Anyway, the biggest problem is that Tommy Yune is a hack writer who decided to void the entire last couple episodes to totally change how the original series ended. In the series, Scott and Ariel (along with the their band of fighters, plus Ariel's sister, who comes over to their side during the last stages of the conflict) convince the leader of the Invid that she had become the very thing she was fighting, and ended the war with her departure. In SC, all this is gone(including the OTHER FIVE members of the team) and the Regis is leaving earth because another threat is coming - WTF? Furthermore, the dates are off. It's obvious from watching the series and the character comments that the last story arc is in the mid-2030s, and that the Invid arrived only in the last 4 years or so - Yune rewrote it (and even had the DVDs of the original series "remastered" edition retconned) to the early 2040s - apparently to match up with a failed attempt to acquire another Macross series "coincidentally" starting months after SC's time - complete with the year plastered at the beginning of every episode, and starring a pink-haired daughter of Max and Miriya. The fact that one of the characters fits this description reflects a surviving fragment of that failed attempt. Then there are the high-school-level computer graphics, abysmal writing, and horrid mischaracterization, and the misrepresentation of Hamill's role - the biggest headliner scam since Steven Seagal in "Executive Decision".
contactdburns When Robotech was first aired--I recorded (vcr was all we had in them days, remember?) all three generations even though I didn't like the 2nd generation, Dana's Story, I recorded it anyway so I could have the complete set. It was fascinating---I was in junior high. Loved the drama, the action(people and aliens being killed), and the characters were likable and interesting---the way the stories were told--the dialog-- the visuals, animation--it was just bad ass. I felt like I was there and I couldn't wait to see the next episode. Now-a-days, I watch the DVD's of the series, and the characters are like old friends. When I heard this Movie was made, I was hoping to catch up with some of the old characters---like Rick Hunter, Max Sterling, Myria, Lisa Hayes, Lynn Minmei, Rand, Rook, etc. Didn't happen. The only character you see is Rick Hunter when he mumbles a couple of sentences on a broken video transmission. Thats it. Maybe ten seconds of footage. Total rip off. Oh, and Scott Bernard w/Ariel(Marlene?). He didn't say a lot in the third generation, but he thought a lot--we could here his thoughts--not in this movie. The new characters were lame. Dull. ALL of the females had large bulbous breasts. Taking away from the characters themselves I believe. Those boobs were too much of a focal point I believe. When I saw all that cleavage with no pay off nudity, I felt robbed. The movie was set almost entirely in outer space which made it even more boring. Part of the allure of Robotech was the battles on earth's countryside and in urban environments. In this movie, when aliens were killed or humans for that matter, they just disintegrated and disappeared----nothing like the series: when aliens were killed they may lose limbs or pieces and turn into bleeding carcasses. Same deal with the human deaths--you may see flesh burning off skin during an explosion---much more realistic. The point: no detail in the animation.
stakenyf You know, I could babble in length about why I think this film is poor and not worth seeing unless you are a die-hard fan of the Robotech series, in which case you'll be greatly disappointed if you're expecting anything of the sort that got you hooked on the original series in the first place. The story is poor and unsatisfying for a long awaited continuation of the saga. The animation, both CG and conventional is rigid, cold and lifeless and sometimes looks downright amateur. The sound effects are lame. Does it have any good moments in it? Yeah, the opening score that borrows from the original Robotech series, but that is short lived. The rest is just a big expectation that never gets fulfilled, and then it's over. It's interesting to hear the creators of this film in the "making of" bonus feature talk passionately about how they strived to retain the feel of the original series and how proud they are. - People! Pardon me but you have failed miserably at that! Apparently this is supposed to be the beginning chapter of a new Robotech series. Well if that's the case, my advice would be to fire everybody that was involved in this project and hire others to do it.In the meantime, if you're hungry for Robotech, stick to Macross Plus or Macross Zero if you haven't seen them already. And if you have, watch 'em again.
Mantrix7 This is a great comeback for Robotech!!!!!even for new generations who had no clue the saga even existed, I'm sure that if the producers decide to give continuity to the saga, there will be a great outcome out of this plot; My only complaint is that it was too short, way too short to develop the story with more intensity, but at the same time it was action packed from start to finish; Trust me, You will not get bored!!!! To catch up with the plot I would recommend everyone to watch the New Generation Saga all over again and to read the comic book mini series: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles, as they will introduce you to the whole panorama seen in the movie; Then again I'm just a long-time fan from the original series and this movie made me re-live and recall the good times I had 17 years ago, Definitively a Must-seeThe Lord of the X-Dreams
