Dalbert Pringle After I patiently endured having Sweet Movie's sexual carnage (that included cruelty, hatefulness, and humiliation) repeatedly ground into my face for 100 minutes - I am now completely convinced that its director/writer, Dusan Makavejev was nothing but an absolute peasant of the lowest calibre. And the degrading, white-trash, gutter-level attitude that prevails throughout this film's storyline proves my accusation against Makavejev to be 100% correct, over and over again.I mean - It really figures that this picture is so vile and sick-minded in nature that one of its most triumphant "highlights" is for the viewer to witness the exuberant celebration of the depiction of multiple bowel movements at close range. (Spare me!)C'mon - Let's face it - Because 1974's "Sweet Movie" is a foreign film - The snobs-of-cinema gloat all over it and self-righteously christen it as being "Art House".But - You can be sure - Had "Sweet Movie" been an American release it would have promptly been reduced to the level of pure "Trash-House" of the trashiest kind.*Note* - I think it's really disturbing to find out that the National Film Board of Canada was actually involved in partially financing this despicable production.
const Even though I don't agree with some Makavejev's opinions and conclusions, I, still, believe that people might need to know the following basic ideas of this movie. Sugar is sweet. But it is harsh and deadly for human body and mind.Chocolate is very sweet, tasty, delicious. But it is deadly for human mind.Makavejev's prediction of the end of cult of sugar 15 years before it happened is very impressive. But what about the chocolate cult? You have been eating chocolate all your life. And you are sure you are OK. But are you really thinking you are ALIVE?
SurWilliam Forgive the title. I saw someone had a similar title for their review and I thought it was hilarious. I really don't think spoilers are relevant in a film like this...I never became sexually aroused while watching this film.I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing....Furthermore, I was neither disturbed nor disgusted, which also makes me wonder whether I've seen too many things in my life that I shouldn't have. I think I grasp the director's intended message and that which other reviewers here are trying to express, but I rather wonder when it's all said done what it was all for. Now I've seen someone defecate on camera. (actually, I had already seen someone defecate on camera prior to watching this film- maybe that's why I found it rather anti-climactic)I think this film may have been much more relevant when it was made, but today it's little more than a curious relic. All in all, it's an interesting art flick. Finish any meals before watching.A great primer for Salo.
omarramonmuniz Sweet Movie is a brilliantly absurdist expose about ideological imprisonment and innocence lost. OK, that sentence might sound absurd itself, but let's put it this way. Makavejev has created a brave, brave film. It communicates very engaging thoughts without spoon-feeding us. It does this visually and relies on the experiences and intelligence of the audience to make of it what they will. Montage is used in a smart way. Collages are created with the mis-en-scene. Hilarious juxtaposition, vibrant colors and detailed textures are constant. The music is underground and reoccurs in natural points in the. And politically speaking, it's an incredibly brave and isolated film that accuses the soviets of a crime they had long since denied at the time. Sweet Movie is NOT a snuff film. It is NOT a cult film. Those adjectives water down this intelligent avant-garde film. This is film is nothing like the films of John Waters. Plus, I would like to criticize some of the harsh critics of this movie. Many dislike the film because of the brutal scene in the commune where the members vomit and spit amongst other things. And this film was banned in London because of the scene where the young boys are seduced on the boat traveling through Amsterdam canals. I find it peculiar that those are the scenes that would disturb you, when there is an gut-wrenching intercut scene of raw footage revealing the aftermath of heinous massacres where bodies have been burned to a crisp and shoved in the ground. It's an example of how society finds sex and bodily functions more disturbing than the savagery of genocide.
