cufc01 If you take the film for what it is - a damning indictment of the American treatment of suspected POWs, entirely against the Geneva Convention - then it deserves praise for its reconstruction of the appalling American hypocrisy perpetrated at Guantanamo Bay.Unfortunately the film entirely fails to question why these British citizens travelled to Afghanistan and then, by their own later admission, attended militant training camps. Instead, it portrays them as virtually completely innocent and caught up in circumstances beyond their control. While in no way excusing the utterly unacceptable and shameful behaviour of the US government and military, the fact that these lads clearly put themselves in the way of danger is not sufficiently explored in the film.
Alan Williamson (Runrig) This movie i had heard of. I had seen the press for it, and sometimes you have to be in a frame of mind to watch something of this magnitude. I knew it was going to probably blow my mind in terms of how the the orange-jump-suit prisoners are not only treated, but how they get there in the first place.Last night, the time had come. My perception was shattered and I now look at the US (and my own government) with disgust. These lads, were definitely no choir boys in the UK, but they were no more a threat to national security than any other group of young teenagers. What shocked me the most, was how they were trying to convince the men that it was them on the video tape and how they were photographed sitting in rallies listening to the Bin Laden. Sheer mental torture. Then the moment of "oh my god" came. One of the three, put 2 and 2 together and realized he had a cast iron alibi -- at the time they were accusing him of being with Bin Laden, he was actually in UK prison! Fantastic -- their whole game was blown out of the water. There was no more mind games these guys could do, to him, or his friends. The fact that it had to go on for so long was a complete outrage.I for one, will be lobbying my MP seeing what the current situation is.Watch this movie -- then ASK questions.
ot_lowrider First of all I want to comment movie: Movie turned out to be documentary... but even documentaries on History Channel are better than this one. It looks like "five o'clock new coverage, from middle east". I don't like the concept. Really short action scenes cut out with interviews of real people is not something that I enjoy. Actors are not that bad, but there is no much acting. Scenes are no longer than a minute. There is too much numbers and there are no characters. There are characters but they are just numbers. There guys, five bombings, two hundred people died, stayed in prison for 3 years. Everythin seems just like war report.Second, I would tell a bit about whats going on (no spoilers, don't worry): This is happy ending movie, documentary, report, whatever. In war... there is no happy endings. And thats the point that documentary like this must have. They survive, and guy get married and they live in Englad for a long time. Whats with people that are not England citizens? Who was born in Afghanistan, raised and died there!? No one makes a movie about them!? Im from Serbia, and I was bombed from USA/UK forces couple of times... So I take this documentary a little bit personal... This movie is made for people from USA/UK to see whats really going on... and to show some other side of their government. But on end, its happy end. Truth wins. And everyone will go "awwwww...." like they are watched Jenny Jones show. Thats why this documentary has no point! Three guys have survived but millions have died and still do!(sorry on my bad English)
lastliberal This is the reality of the dictatorship that we live under today. George Bush and his neocons have completely discarded the rule of law and are engaging in torture to pursue their evil ends. This documentary shows what can happen not only to three Brits who were traveling to a wedding, but to anyone who lives in America under the present circumstances. The military, who are not to blame as they were just ignorant rednecks following orders, are made to be cartoon characters. The "interregators" are just like police everywhere, they lie and deceive just to get someone to confess. The fact that they have been unable to get a confession shows just how ridiculous they are. Bellieve me, I would have confessed to buggery under those conditions.Once we remove Bush from office in another 664 days, then Guantanamo should be closed and leveled to the ground so that not one stone sits atop another. It is too much to hope that Bush and his cohorts in crime would ever be borough to trial and punished as the war criminals they are for this sad chapter in our history.
