Maciste_Brother HISTOIRE D'O is famous and yet few will say they've seen it or admit they've seen it. Just look at the few reviews posted here at IMDb. The main reason is simply because the whole thing is risible! It's beautifully shot but still risible. It's almost like an old Benny Hill sketch : O loves Rene but Rene loves Jacqueline who loves Sir Stephen who loves O who loves Jacqueline who loves the fire hydrant. On and on it goes. I truly wondered what planet they were living on since very little of it made sense. Do they ever buy groceries? Wait in line at the bank? You know, things normal mortals do. The story wants us to believe it's all about love but love has nothing to do with the people inhabiting this baroque soft-core reverie. Love? Hahaha!Like all "erotic" films of the period, all women are bisexual, or anythingsexual, ready to take off their filmy clothes for the audiences' viewing pleasure. This brings up the main point of the "film" : the focus is only on the women which makes me wonder why they'd bothered with the male characters, who were very boring. Obviously the director, producers, and writer didn't care for them. They are merrily there to serve a purpose. The film would have been much more honest if the entire cast had been female, which during one segment it was. This is probably the best part of the film, not because it's all female but because the lecherous filmmakers could finally show every detail of the females' bodies along with their "tortured" minds. The only saving grace of this superficial "charnel" nonsense was Corinne Clery. Remove her from the film and there would be nothing left to watch. Corinne was practically naked throughout the film. Her body was perfect back then. In the end, the entire "complex" story, bogged down by its own pretensions and limitations, was bereft of the one thing they wanted to achieve : true eroticism.
tuhksuhkur Well, where do I start...Dialogues were emptily delivered and didn't carry any or almost any weight (you can straight up forget about basic human emotions and/or facial expressions). Throughout the whole movie, and yes, I was able to somehow sit through the whole thing, I had a feeling, that none of the actors were actually familiar with the script. So no points in that department. Interesting, what the casting process was like... Speaking of which, the actress for the main character, being 25 at the time, seemed to be a virgin playing in a movie with more sex scenes than cable TV after dark. Needless to say she looked to be a little out of her element. But considering, it was almost her first role on the big screen, we'll give her a pass. Specially keeping in mind, that it most certainly wasn't the easiest role to play (since she had to act while being naked and tied up in front of people with strange mustaches holding microphones and cameras who are trying to make sure nobody realizes their "excitement"). That being said, according to this picture female orgasm means shaking your head and occasionally making strange noises.Ooh! Spoiler alert... THE MOVIE BLOWS!!!3 rubber gags out of 10
justbhonestme I am into this lifestyle and can tell you that this movie is accurate. It is not played up for TV, nor is it over-harsh in it's content. This could very easily be someone's actual journal entries in this lifestyle. And very easily could be a real place in many countries. The extreme nature of this movie, however, is an extreme version of bsdm, and should not be the only thing you judge BDSM on. There are many other movies and how-to's on the subject. This movie will not be for everyone, but those who like it, and are interested by it....should look into BDSM further for sure. Those who judged this movie so harshly....do not know what they are watching and therefore, think it is a "bad" movie. I feel sorry for them. They are making themselves look silly.
mwriter-2 One of the hardest things to do for me is watch a film adapted from a novel I have read. Sadly, one is often expecting more and left with less, and for this reason I resisted watching this movie for many many years. But I can say, the purist might easily find many faults, indeed I had, but as a film I can respect it and recommend it as a good film about romance, titillation and for its time a bold attempt to capture a complex and controversial novel on film. The casting was mostly superb. Each main character was believable, even if they did not fully walk off the pages so to speak. As the title character, Corinne Clery physically fulfilled the part of O, and I found her to have delivered a lovely rendering of the character, as the other actors seemed to also achieve. The Story of O is a love story, and at bottom I think the film artfully delivered a good romance movie. I expected bad pornography but was very pleased with the it, certainly it has some kitsch and the S&M might offend some, but even that actually gets delivered rather gingerly and I thought respectfully. Perhaps that is my greatest concern with the film, that it gently tells a hard story, that it masks what should have been unmasked, but it is unfair to pommel the film over that because I am not certain the real story could have been told on film even in France. It is respectful criticism that I only fault the film for drifting from the story on points that I feel cause the film to become more about filming than storytelling. I also must say that the film at times was too literal from the novel and seemed to lose some of the context that I say this in recognition that the novel is not an easy story to convey because it is subject to a lot of interpretation by the reader.I think the more tragic ending of the book would not have served this film, the apparent happy ending for O and Rene and Sir Stephan makes this film its own interpretation, one I can respect and even enjoy.I recommend a reading of the book to any viewer and feel that if one can view how O is pursuing uninhibited and unconditional love, even at great sacrifice, then both book and movie might have greater impact than a visage of Ms. Clery's lovely body and some kinky overlays of Sadomasochism.
