Hitchcoc This has become a bit of a cult film; hence you are charmed by it or find it utterly worthless. I made it through the thing, but fore me, I couldn't abide the troll. This does have its roots in many possession movies, like Poltergeist, where people try to live their daily lives in a horror house. It does have a decent plot and fairly decent special effects. Michael Moriarity is one of my favorite actors, going back to his solid role as a German SS man in the "Holocaust" made for TV movie. And, of course, Bang the Drum Slowly. He must have been desperate for cash when he signed on for this.
maxcarnage This movie is not terrible but not that good to me it is just a wacky 80's horror/comedy/fantasy some of the parts i liked was the creativity what other movie had magic trolls for villains and the setting of the movie I liked. The things i did not like at all were some plot holes and the ending. The ending was pointing to a sequel by the policemen finding a troll this ending was fine but what i didn't like was how they didn't follow it in trolls 2.The plot holes were a little confusing but not really that important. this movie was just a product of its time and will probably be A forgotten relic of the 80's that no one will remember. In conclusion this movie in not terrible and i would suggest for people to watch it if they like corny 80's movies and people who like 80's cinema.
tiskec **THIS REVIEW COULD CONTAIN A LOT OF SPOILERS. I RECOMMEND TO THE READERS OF THIS REVIEW SHOULD VIEW THE FILM BEFORE READING THIS REVIEW. THANK YOU.** This movie gives you this childhood feel to it. I felt like I was around 12 years old again, and just gotten back from the video store with a scary movie. It definitely has that child corniness applied to it. The troll in the movie looks more playful and fun, rather than scary and evil. To go along with the films elementary feel, the story-line of magic applied in this film (provided by an old woman, that lives in the same apartment building as the little girl who becomes possessed later on) is very childlike. It's almost like it came right out of a Disney film. When the Troll emerges in the film, and takes over this boy's sister's physical form, the Troll lives with the family, and performs everyday functions with them. The only one who knows is her brother, who eventually turns to the old woman for help. She's also a witch. I don't know how the mother and father of these children didn't know this little girl was different when the Troll possessed her. That was kind of over-the-top, hence the little girl was acting like a total retard, born in 200 B.C. or some S**t. Yeah, it's crazy. The funniest part I've seen, and yes, sorry to spoil it for whoever reads this, is when the Troll sees a little-person outside (Troll is using little girls body by this time) it goes up to him and says "brother." I don't know why this was so funny. I cracked up though. Weird. The movie definitely does fit the 1980's cheesy magic and fantasy sector of film. That kind of filming was very popular during this time. Same thing with the use of muppets for some weird reason. Anyway, if you like a cheesy movie every now and then, there is no other movie than Troll to fulfill your delights. All in all, I say the acting was low-average, the story-line was okay-not the best, and the dialog was so-so. Like I said, only watch this movie if your looking for a cheesy and unrealistic movie.
mtrahan97 This film is a mess from minute 1 to 82. From half of its actors seemingly not knowing how to act like humans to a very poorly thought out siege plan on the troll's part, this is a movie that seems to be begging to be made fun of. And when I come in contact with a mess like this, there are usually two ways to approaching it:One way is the rational way by hating or at least disliking it. Plenty of messy films are in no way enjoyable to watch, leaving me unsatisfied. The second way is the "so bad it's good" routine. Troll 2 certainly falls in this category. To me it's neither. People often shoehorn the two Troll movies together as enjoyably bad films, yet I have trouble saying that this first one is uproariously bad. Why? Truly, there is something so innocent about the movie that making fun of it would seem cruel. After all, it's less nasty than your usual horror movie, besides Sonny Bono having foreplay with a woman half his age. The Troll himself is the least threatening thing in the movie. Don't believe me? Google search this movie and see the Troll and his constant smile for yourself. Now imagine that for the whole movie! And as the killer! And it's not a creepy Alex-from-Clockwork- Orange smile either. Instead we get the cutest possible sad Muppet smile. This will be disappointing if you're looking for a horror movie, but infinitely endearing if you want a fantasy film. There are also some genuinely good performances. June Lockhart and Phil Fondacaro are so warm in their parts and Julie Louis Dreyfuss shows screen presence in her three scenes. Also Jenny Beck's performance as a Troll-turned-girl, while over-the-top certainly, shows a lot of commitment that was respectable. What also showed commitment was Michael Moriarty's dancing. This movie also has better effects than I expected. The Troll costumes and puppets are convincing along with all of the practical effects with only a few missteps. It actually feels like talented people are doing a dumb movie, which is usually better than hacks doing a dumb movie. Then you get Troll 2. That's why calling this movie "so bad it's good" is unfair to me. It's like making fun of a four year old making you a sandwich. It's trying it's best and is so innocent that even when it fails, you can't help but appreciate the effort. So I enjoy Troll. Is it a bad movie? Probably. Is it a good movie? Probably that too. Is it either one definitively? That, I can't say. All I can say is that you should "shut the door!" sit back, and enjoy innocently quirky junk.
