RavenGlamDVDCollector {the 8 is for the spirit...}The human element is everything in this show. The little kid in us will gaze in wonder at the Colonial Vipers and the Cylon Raiders and the gigantic colossus that is the Galactica, but it is the human element that carried it. Without that human element portrayed to the full, there is really nothing here but a bunch of little pieces of junk zooming across the screen.I am a fan of this show. But does it stand up to closer inspection in this day and age? Not for more than a few centons, no. Does one cringe at seeing the sane explosion thrice in the same minute? Yeah, very much so.Let me point out some very, very obvious mistakes:The Ceylons become dorky if they appear for more than a few seconds. All cockpit scenes, of which there are many, are generally very, very lame. Please not another stranded warrior Western! And, as mentioned, the exploding spacecraft are repetitive, not to mention poorly executed. It works as a movie, when you see it for the first time. But as a TV series, the problems overcome it. You've seen one episode, you've seen them all.But what saves it, is the human element. Starbuck and Apollo, heroes, created during a bygone era, but better than anything around today (love those uniforms, wow!). Lothario Starbuck with his stream of conquests and his passion for more. Apollo the responsible one. Adama, commands instant respect. Baltar, wow, great villain, born to lose, but great doing so. Boxey, what a cute little boy. Unfortunately, the female side has a lot of deserters. Jane Seymour was wonderful, simply perfect as Serena, but that was short-lived, and the first major flaw of the show, though not its fault. Then there's Maren Jensen. Promising, but hardly ever there. I suspect there were health problems, research on Wikipedia shed some light. Laurette Spang is more than just a bit of an under-performer. Anyway, major character change there, Cassiopeia wasn't originally intended to be a nurse. The network balked at the naughtier first idea, the pilot, "Saga of a Star World" with it's (then) more risky approach. I am not an expert here yet. Currently watching episode 11 on DVD, and what I remember from having seen it eons ago, is just too vague to count, so I can but hope that upcoming Anne Lockhart will score as highly with me as Jane Seymour did and as high as Maren Jensen would have had she really been there. But I repeat, without the magic of the human interaction, it's really all just a bunch of noise and endlessly repeated same scenes often in suspiciously convenient old movie sets.I cheer for it despite knowing that there is very little hope of the production values pulling it off. It remains totally, totally likable in a wholesome awesome way.The look of it all, it is just awesome. The execution of it, that's another story, unfortunately. For it's time, I can quite imagine, nothing else like it. Not on television anyway. But today, let's just admit, you gotta he crazy, but, hell, it sure is fun.
lessardjoseph-558-701267 I always thought of this show as a sort of spin off from the 1970s Star Wars craze. The show is based on Egyptian mythology, and sprinkled with characters having the manes of Greek gods. This show was well written and should have had more than one season. I loved it when it came out in the late 70s. It had a good moral compass, like Star Wars, showing there was a clear line between good(humans) and evil(cylons). Galactica 1980 was not as good, but tried to complete the story line with the Galactica finally finding earth. The remake of 2004 was visuallystunning. But I found the cast a jumble of screwed up people who should be locked up in an asylum. It was a ship full of drunken sociopaths. The line between good and evil was blurred; I suppose much like society today. I guess I'm getting old and prefer the nostalgia of watching the old show. As in that show, we were a different people in the 70s and 80s. We understood that there is good, and there is evil. Time marches on.
theoneheart The special effects and characters in the pilot episode were enjoyable. The premise was well beyond belief. We're supposed to believe that in a time of war the wise men of an advanced human race leave all their colonies and battle stars unprotected in the hopes of peace. The USA couldn't achieve that level of defenselessness with months of focused suicidal preparation. After most of their leaders and people are annihilated, the newly elected council advises disarming and placing the people at the mercy of a ruthless regime. The stupidity of these people defies human nature. Hopefully, the following episodes allow the viewer to suspend disbelief.
Siegfried Hedwig It remains a fact: You need to take into account when a film or show was made.Saying that, I can only state that BSG remains a true Sci-Fi classic. If you shift your view from the obvious conflict man-machine, to the inner conflicts of mankind trying to escape, there is more than enough substance for great entertainment.Although special effects are not flawless, it was almost revolutionary when it was produced. You are not laughing at even older classics as well. The score of the show definitely stands out and for me surpasses even the remake of 2004.
