Mcc8007 This gets a 5 only because Firth's and Bacon's performances could make any movie seem good. Still, I'm surprised that actors of their caliber would appear in a movie like this. Their performances were brilliant, but the writing was all over the place with some really dull lines. This movie could have been a whole lot better with a more artful screenplay and someone (ANYONE) other than Allison Lohman playing the lead. She is the most expressionless "actress" I have ever seen. She played the part in this film with the same affect as she used in "White Oleander." It worked in that part, but not in this one. And, the writing. Really? NO writer who was good enough to be given a $1 million story would take drugs with the subject of her book. And the whole airplane "coincidence" was ridiculous.Firth's and Bacon's performances would have made a multi-award-winning movie with a little more attention to script editing and a better actress playing the journalist. Think of how good this movie would have been with Jennifer Lawrence in it.
kneiss1 Actors, atmosphere, music, set, everything was on an extremely high level. Especially the witty conversations have been fun to listen to. Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth have been very convincing in their role. I can't imagine a better cast. The one thing that really spoiled the fun for me, has been the story. I like mystery stories, but none that overdo it with the mystery, and no longer make sense. The whole story was so absurd, that all the pretty conversations, lost their emotional weight, and simply went down the drain. Knowing the absurd ending, would make a second view only worse. Too bad, this could have been so much better.
lewiskendell "Having to be a nice guy is the toughest job in the world when you're not."Where the Truth Lies is pretty decent mystery/thriller that I probably would have never seen if it didn't have Alison Lohman in it. I'm glad I did, though, because I liked it quite a bit. More than I expected to.The story is about a young journalist in the 1970's (Lohman) who is charged with writing a book about a two-man song & dance showbiz act that she idolized as a kid. There's a mystery about a girl who mysteriously died in their hotel room in the 50's, and as she learns more about the two men (played by Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth) and the incident of the woman's death, she finds out secrets that may be best left uncovered.I thought the plot was pretty good, though it perhaps had one more twist than was wanted or necessary. All of the main actors did a fine job, and worked well together. I have to mention that this movie is unrated (at least, the version I watched), and there's plenty of sex and nudity. Not to the extent of what you can find on Cinemax on any given night or anything like that, but how much you enjoy seeing Alison Lohman naked (or Kevin Bacon's butt, for the ladies) will probably influence your opinion of the movie. Let's just say that I had no complaints. If you're looking for a way to spend a few hours in front of the couch, you could do a lot worse than Where the Truth Lies. For an under the radar movie, I thought it was solid and entertaining.
sergepesic Oh, what a difference bad casting decision can make. " Where the truth lies" had such a great potential. Two very strong leading actors, Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth, intriguing story, creative director, but... The catastrophic acting of Alison Lohman sabotaged the whole thing. The utter lack of artistic presence, wobbly, girlish voice, completely at odds with the part. There are thousands of talented young actresses, and why in the world would you cast her. There was no saving this movie after that bad decision. Two leading protagonists were doing their very best, lovely camera work brought us back to the times long gone. But to no avail. What a shame.
