Film Buff I was expecting to see a half decent Zombie film having seen that it starred Ving Rhames from Pulp Fiction and the Mission Impossible films as well as Taryn Manning who I was reliably informed starred in Orange is the New Black. I was wrong to expect even a half decent film. It follows the usual path with a group of Zombie Apocalypse survivors trying to reach a safe haven whilst fighting their way past hordes of Zombies. I say hordes when actually it probably numbers less than 80. The acting is really poor especially from Taryn Manning who at one point runs away from a large zombie fight only to berate the rest of the group for letting her friend get killed by the Zombies during the fight. The dialogue is equally poor which even good actors would struggle to deliver with any conviction. At one point, whilst planning the final part of their journey, the Archers remind each other to retrieve any arrows they can along the way as they're going to need them. Within a couple of minutes they shoot 3 Zombies which are blocking their path but as they then casually walk past them they completely disregard their earlier conversation and leave their arrows sticking out of the Zombies. This is a really poor film with poor acting, terrible dialogue, awful directing and cheap visual effects. Look elsewhere to fill 87 minutes of your life.
Trent Browning "Zombie Apocalypse" premiered on the 'Syfy Channel' on October 27th, 2011. with the pleasant surprise of mixed reviews implying that film was 'one of the better films produced by The Asylum/ what's been introduced on the Syfy channel' I decided to check out the film my self. The first few scenes were extremely impressive, introducing the film when the virus was spreading across globe-wide, six months later, 90% of the population wiped out; only a small group of survivors left civilised. "Zombie Apocalypse" has a very basic plot - A small group of survivors try to get Catalina, rumoured that there was a refuge on the island, with Cassie hinting that her husband remains on the island as a doctor. Simple as that, a basic plot, with interesting aspects here and there. However, the term 'Zombies' was over-used, made the film less believable, but however - it's a zombie film, what can be believable."Zombie Apocalypse" was directed by Nick Lyon, who is known to his other projects being finalised on the Syfy channel, such as Annihilation Earth and Rise Of The Zombies, including Zombie Apocalypse. Nick Lyon is definitely a director that made the film much better than it intended it to be, he truly captured some beautiful moments within the film that caught my eye, such as - when Taryn Manning ran into the school-showers and a zombie was chasing after her, as she hid behind one of the shower walls then attacked him after a little game of Hide & Seek, all done into one take, which I was impressed about. The Asylum have a reputation for 'stealing' other films ideas and interpret into their own piece of work, "Zombie Apocalypse" highlights say that it's in the style of 'Dawn Of The Dead' - Ving Rhames, as you can see, and an interpret of 'Zombieland' which I quite didn't get the idea off. However, the film does get a thumbs up for me, especially by the same company who produced "Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus and SuperCroc" The film "Zombie Apocalypse" did have minor flaws, the down-fall of the film had to be the special effects, the blood-bursts were just not realistic and it got irritating at times, especially when a shot-gun exploded a zombies arm off, but what can you do on a million-dollar production, you can't have every aspect perfected in this situation. I do give the film credit for the damaged cities and the constant smoke-effect in the background of a scene. It was a pleasure to see Ving Rhames rise up on another zombie film, which was a surprise as he took on a supporting character and not a lead, but his character did out-shine in the film, but I kept thinking, how much did the production pay him... I do recommend you buying this on Blu-Ray, (I had to of course) it looked out-standing once it hit my screen, it's a definite buy if you're a zombie-lover and bored on a Saturday night, but if you're more into a CGI-Explosion film, this film won't be the right choice for you. Overall, I give this film a 10/10, not just for the minor-mistakes but mostly for the pure entertainment. -Trent Browning
bringamac ****WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT*************This Movie had really bad ratings all over. a lot of people did not like it for Various Reasons. I kinda went into watching this movie knowing not to expect much, after all it is a straight to TV movie. Or a some like to Call them "B Grade" Flicks. But I liked it, It was pretty good for those of us fans of the Genre. Pros: 1. I was truly shocked as to how well this movie did being it had a TV Movie Budget. 2. The filming of the Location was decent, or at least they tried to make the same neighborhood used throughout the Movie Apocalyptic. 3. The actors played their parts OK, their acting wasn't Academy Worthy, but definitely a lot better than most other TV (Especially SyFy Movie actors lol) 4. The overall story was written out pretty well, it wasn't a movie that was hard to follow like other Zombie Films.Cons: 1. The CGI was Horrible!, I don't want to be such a critique but my oh my it was bad. But I constantly have to remind myself that this isn't Zombieland, or 28 Days/Weeks Later. 2. They seem to have used the same extras for zombies over and over lmao. 3. The filming location was obviously the same through out the movie, They keep mentioning wanting to get to Catalina Island yet it seems they keep circling Catalina Ct. 4. The makeup on some of the extras was pretty bad, and some zombies could have apparently ran in the Olympics... 5. This list could go on.I'll end it like this, if you like the Zombie Genre, or Horror/Thriller/Comedy. Check this one out but take it with a grain of salt. I give this film an 8 for trying across all over the board, most other notable actors:when making a low budget film. Do a purposely horrible job, not this cast or crew. 8 out of 10 on a "B Grade" Scale... but on a normal big time Hollywood scale this movie deserves the 4 haha..Cheers my friends.
edwjoolee This movie was pretty bad. One of my favorite movies of all time is the original Dawn of the Dead. And one of my favorite directors of all time happens to be George A. Romero.I have noticed a revival of sorts of zombie themed movies in the last decade or so. I guess the most recent wave started with 28 Days Later and the Dawn of the Dead remake. In their wake, I have noticed a lot of badly made zombie films trying to cash in on their popularity.Zombie Apocalypse is bad. It sort of reminds me of the badly made Italian zombie films from the 80's: rambling plot progression, poorly written script and characters, badly made up zombies and poor special effects. Only thing that differentiates this film from those Italian films is that the characters here speak English and are not dubbed. At least the Italian films' poorly dubbed dialogue provided amusement and unintentional humor to them, making them somewhat watchable at least. Unfortunately, Zombie Apocalypse has neither the camp factor nor the unintentional humor to make it watchable in any way.But the true sad part is this: What the heck is Ving Rhames doing in this movie? I am beginning to notice him more in a lot of badly made straight-to-video films in recent years. I understand that he has bills to pay and family to feed, but please don't completely throw away your artistic integrity for a quick buck. Come on.I am giving this film a 4 out of 10, because it is a zombie film.
