Reviews

bbshockwave I make a point to re-watch this show every 2-3 years or so. And I don't do that often. Maybe because I work at an IT company myself, but so much of the absurdity that comes with working for a giant multicorporation is familiar to me (such as the episode with the memo asking for employees to "NOW use offensive language at work", or the company's idea to redecorate personal workspaces). But also because of the quirky and likable characters - Ted, the likable boss obsessed with being a good father and a good boss, Veronica who might be actually a very human-like robot with very low grasp on this thing meatbags call "emotions", rebellious but well-meaning Linda, and bumbling nerdy "mad" scientists Lem and Phil. The show relies a lot on quick cutaways and inserts sarcastic (yet almost eerily realistic) adverts for the non-existing Veridian Dynamics company every now and then. Frankly, there isn't a single episode I could not recommend, the show is that good. I am still sad that it did not last more than two seasons. And the final episodes of the second season are hard to come by as they were only released on DVD, never aired. Give it a watch if you like office comedy - it is non-stop comedy, never a dull moment.
Adam Smith Better Off Ted delivers a stylish and fiery satire of the modern corporate capitalism. Intelligent script requires the viewer to pay close attention to catch all quips and wisecracks. Veridian dynamics advertisement clips are a strike of genius and deserve a separate mentioning. It is very regrettable that the show followed the path of many excellent projects that did not pander to the mainstream majority and was quickly canceled. I believe the combination of the unfavorable time slot and requiring the viewer to think doomed the show from the beginning.Fortunately, it ran for two seasons, it is a lot of fun to watch - especially if you ever worked for a large company - and all characters are truly lovable, even the ones that are supposed to be villains. Jay Harrington and Portia de Rossi did a great job portraying their characters. Some people will see parallels to U.S. version of the Office.
tile46 This show has no real shtick to speak of. It has style, but, like arrested development, the humor comes from an obvious but usually ignored place. Humor. Wit. Jokes. Cleverness. The show doesn't change it up much. It never adds new characters. There is no drama to speak of. There's no swearing, or shock humor. It relies simply on irony and humor. But the jokes are constant and very in their delivery. It occasionally uses the family guy, 'like that one time I...' flash back tactic but in moderation so you don't get tired of it. The best part is that the characters are so remarkably consistent that you pretty much know everything about them by the end of the first episode, and from then on you can watch the show completely out of order and be just fine. It reminds me of the early seasons of the Simpsons, complete with the wholesome life lessons, but back when they had a back bone. No wonder it was canned. Unlike the Simpsons, better of Ted did not sacrifice itself to fart jokes to rake in viewers.
derek-tomczyk I hear the show might get cancelled which would be a real shame. I first saw the show on a plane flight where it was an option for on-board entertainment and it was so good I had to write the name down so that I could watch all the episodes when I got home. I love the dry humour and the fact that the "company" actually reminds me a bit of my own workplace. It's deliciously evil and the characters are caricatures of people I actually know! Love it! It's a bit like Scrubs in a corporate setting but I think I relate to it better because I don't work in a hospital but rather in a corporation. I think anyone who's ever felt like the company they work for treats them like a nameless drone while the senior managers are fighting pointless political battles that only have their own personal ego's and advancement in mind would really enjoy the humour in this show. Go watch it and if you like it let ABC know they should keep this show playing!
