Reviews

pninson The Dead Zone was one of my favorite Stephen King books, and I liked David Cronenberg's film. So I was delighted to find that the characters and ideas had been re-worked into a TV series with high production values, good scripts and acting. The first two seasons held me spellbound. I watched them on DVD, so I was able to see them in widescreen with the best picture and sound. By the time I got into the third season, though, my interest was starting to fade. I was glad that the love triangle had been resolved so we could move on to something else. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much of an ongoing plot line to replace it.I've watched the first couple of episodes of Season 4, and I have to say, the last one was downright boring. No show can hit on all thrusters all the time, but Dead Zone just isn't holding my interest. I'm not sure why, but I think it's because the characters haven't changed very much. Johnny is still the same guy he was at the beginning. The supporting cast, ditto. What the show needs to revitalize it is an arc that expands on some of the "future" plot at the end of Season 3, or some major changes in the characters.Perhaps I'm missing something by not continuing with it, but with limited time and hundreds of films and shows I want to see, this one is on the back burner for now. It's a shame --- for a while it was one of the best shows on TV.
TraciCarroll The Dead Zone is an excellent show. Cutting-edge graphics and subject matter, interesting twists on each show, plus compelling continuing story lines threaded throughout the individual episodes, make this a great watch. Kudos to the creators (Michael Piller and his son Shawn, who is carrying on his legacy) and actor/producer Anthony Michael Hall (he's come a long way since "Sixteen Candles") plus the rest of the excellent cast. The show has improved with every season, as the cast chemistry increases, rather than fades, and the story lines become even more creative instead of growing stale. Great TV in an era of yawn-same-old-same-old detective/mystery/police shows. Set it on your DVR like me and NEVER MISS ONE EPISODE!!!
Rogthepost I have been reading Stephen King novels for almost thirty years, way before his name became bigger than the title on the cover. During those years King has reached many peaks, along with a few troughs. In my opinion, his finest work was The Dead Zone. When the feature film was released in 1983 I was so disappointed that David Cronenburg had missed the point of the novel. The meaning of the Dead Zone was completely misunderstood, while such an important character as Greg Stillson was introduced at such a late stage, he might as well have been the postman.I'd heard good things about the TV series, so when it started a repeat run tonight I looked forward to it enormously. After seeing one episode I feel so let down. Here was the chance to tell it like the book! What did they do? They killed off Johnny's parents, such important characters in the novel. Where was the wailing of his mother, or the good common sense of his father? There was no agonising by Sarah, instead. she marries the sheriff and they bring up a baby, presumably Johnny's, when in the novel Johnny and Sarah had never shared a bed! When the original story is so good, why do movie makers and TV producers feel the need to change things? To my mind it's laziness in the extreme. It's small wonder that Stephen King is often frustrated by the way his books have been turned to film. I've only seen the first episode, but based on this I can only award it 2 out of 10.
dcobbimdb I saw this at blockbuster and figured "what the hell." It's Stephen King and about psychic stuff, so I figured I was pretty safe. All in all it was good. I haven't seen any of the series, though after seeing the pilot I may try to tune in. The story was good, but what I really liked the best was the visions flashes, especially when Anthony Michael Hall would sort of freeze frame on a vision and explore it. I'm a sucker for good effects and this movie had it (again, can't say anything for the series) but I was impressed with the level of detail in these freeze frame vision scenes, like rain drops and bomb fragments suspended in air, cool stuff. The `Movie' or pilot itself was well rounded in that it had a start, plot, and a finish, as to not leave you with a cliff hanger ending. If you're into Sci-Fi's & effects, check it out.
