70sgayicon Old ladies in Miami. It's like Miami Vice but the sex doesn't count as prostitution since pay is in the form of valuable goods. My grandma and I used to watch this all the time with our 5 cats and I feel like that's very appropriate to mention. Remember the Miami Vice crossover episode? That was crazy. What if they had a spin off where the girls were drug lords? That'd be pretty cool. I hope to one day live like the Golden Girls, but with more cats. I've always wondered why Betty White is the only remaining cast member. This is a great show I love it and highly recommend watching it with your wino aunt.
ComedyFan2010 I watched random episodes now and then but only when I watched all seasons in a row did I realize that it is indeed a very good show.It is about four older women living together and go through issues of love, family and friendship.Well written and beautifully performed by great actresses who all deservingly got Emmys for their performances. What is beautiful about the show is how they manage to bring laughter while also addressing serious issues. And they did a good job doing it with going through anything one can think of. Be it Alzheimers, homosexuality, promiscuity, homelessness, dead husbands or artificial insemination. They do it with such a grace that while one feels and thinks about the topic one is also never down and enjoys the laughter. And it is great that the cast are women over 40. One doesn't get many shows even these days who look at that group of people as normal living being who are not senile and still enjoy life and sex. I wonder if it was hated back in the days the way SATC was by some people a decade ago.
angelicseven All The Golden Girls TV series depicts what would be shockingly unacceptable for viewing audience back in the 50's and 60's and especially not for minors to view. It would not have been shown on TV and have been rated X for adults.. only to be seen at Drive In Theatres. Not only because of adult themes but because of the immoral swearing; which it could of done without for it to be a success. It goes to show behavior principles of right & wrong have been tossed out the window. Whenever I think of this show I'm reminded of a country song that says "slap grandma's mouth", which is what needs to be done with these mature women. As they are nothing like role model grandma's are suppose to be like and seems to encourage disgusting ways that are unacceptable for that age group. Golden years of mature women are suppose to be full of wisdom not more stupidity and certainly not repulsive to where you'd be ashamed of them. If anything, this show depicts through Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia dirty laundry of grandma's who try to come out looking clean at the expense of degrading each other or other people in ways that the viewing audience never seems to grasp. Instead of dirty old man.. we are seeing dirty old women. The creation of Golden Girls is nothing precious or really entertaining and reveals that there are some elderly women or grandma's who are nothing like we think or expect them to be. Which is a darker side of reality. On a more positive note it does show women at a mature age does and can have a life and just cause you're not around enough to see it, doesn't mean they aren't doing something. Also that some things can be ridiculous to the point of being funny at that age. It did however suggest if the elderly joined together under one household that they could compensate for each other to the point of not having to end up in a nursing home; which is kinda like in a prison. That together, there can be fun & meaningful purposes to live out your life in dignity than disgrace. It's bad that so much of society has bought into evil as the acceptable good.
TheLittleSongbird I absolutely love The Golden Girls, it is a classic and compulsively watchable any time of the year and ideal for anybody. The production values are top notch, with nice photography and the clothes and sets are pleasant on the eyes. The music is memorable, with a addictive and infectious main theme. There is also the writing, which is also superb. While it is always funny, there is also room for poignancy which works wonders. The Golden Girls has great story lines as well, always well-constructed and entertaining with racy topics that understandably can be seen as controversial in the day.The main cast are amazing to watch. I am especially accustomed to Betty White's(always a welcome presence) Rose, while Rue McClanahan is comedy gold. Estelle Getty has a strong character and works really well with it, likewise with Beatrice "Bea" Arthur. While these women have their conflicts and issues, deep down you can tell they genuinely care for each other. All in all, a wonderful show and one of the best of the 80s, perhaps even ever. 10/10 Bethany Cox
