leplatypus If you are a fan of the Godfather Trilogy, you'll like this feature. Otherwise, if you raise an eyebrow of interrogation, well, don't worry: after seeing this show, you will run to rent this another famous trilogy.Indeed, the «Last Don» has all the flavour of Mario Puzzo, that is to say an immersion in the big families of the Cosa Nostra. The thematic values already developed in the before mentioned classic movies, are met again in this adaptation of another of his novel: Family, Tragedy, Love, Honour, Wedding, Loyalty, Murder, Plots and Sicilia. It is always surprising how dichotomized or schizophrenic all those religious families can be. They give absolute devotion to the family, but they can wipe it all in one moment if the codes have been broken. There is no place for empathy, for forgiveness. The good point in the «Last Don» would be that the classic material is shown in new directions or territories: Childhood, Teenagers life, Hollywood, California. It may be interesting to find how the story could be the real sequel of the Godfather, part II. Maybe, Mario Puzzo, not really convinced by the part III, would have liked to tell the last story of his dreams. I didn't read any interviews of his motives to write the «Last Don», so I can't tell more.About the movie, sure, Clifford isn't Coppola, Aiello isn't Paccino or Brando, and TV isn't theater. But the story is very well introduced, all the actors are convincing. At the end, you'll get a fine feeling to this show, and that is what must count. And remember: Books are great too ! So, you are also invited to read the Godfather and the Last Don, available at your nearest library.
radesch1 I was a bit confused on who's son/daughter, was who's. That includes grand children. Maybe I'm getting old but I really had a hard time trying to figure out who belonged to whom. Probably because it was condensed from a long mini-series to a movie so one must take that into consideration and overlook it.But, that aside this movie was excellently done. The cast was well chosen and did a very good job. However, the performances of Aiello and Mantegna were OUTSTANDING. I didn't realize, until this movie, just how good these two really were. This movie is definetly on the par with Godfather and Goodfellows for substance and character. If you want to see realistically how the mob worked and haven't see the aforementioned movies this one is a must.Worth renting, buying and seeing again several times.
David Vanholsbeeck Probably quite good if you've never seen any of the Godfather movies before. Unfortunately, I have. And it's not that I'm a big fan of these films, but after having seen this series I really think it's hard to outdo them. I know, comparing this TV series to 3 all-time classics may seem an unlucky choice. But the story line is so familiar, the actors try so hard to imitate Pacino, Brando and co,etc. And Dany Aiello (who had a SMALL part in The Godfather!)and Joe Mantegna just aren't that good an actor to carry a whole series that's so familiar of The Godfather 1,2 and 3. 5/10
yenlo I was in the process of reading the book as the movie was being televised. I taped it for future viewing until I finished the novel. The book was to say the least not one of Puzos best. Then I watched the movie on tape. It wasn't any better than the book. The overall story just didn't have that Mario Puzo Mafia "ZING" to it like The Godfather had so it left a talented corps of actors with little to work with.
