Arlis Fuson I bought this DVD at wal-mart for $5 and admit I wasn't expecting much. I tried watching it once and made it maybe ten minutes before giving up...I made it this time and it wasn't too bad.The legend of the Jersey Devil has been around a long time and is a well known legend in those parts. There are many myths about what it is exactly and one of those myths is that it's a shape shifting native American that was the 13th child of a tribe chief killed by British soldiers. This movie tells a fictitious version of that. A lady is sent to investigate after more bodies mysteriously are found mutilated in the woods in Jersey. All leads point to a mysterious hermit in the woods played By Cliff Robertson. The director here is a nobody, but he has several shots that I enjoyed. This movie has a real 80's horror movie feel to it. He often changes camera angles and focuses hard to get the shots just right and from the right perspective. Sad that he has done nothing else. I will admit though I hated the opening scenes with the sloppy fast camera work symbolizing the running of the actor, I am a firm believer in letting the actor work and do the action and not letting the camera do the action to cut corners for lack of a location to shoot your scenes in. The director needs to become a character with his beautiful shots, but never ever interfere with the actors.Acting wise it was full of used up nobodies from old 80's TV fame. Cliff Robertson co-wrote and stared, and he did okay. Robertson is a good actor, and he's still getting successful roles to this day. The lead actress was boring and playing that cliché cop role females always portray. We had the token black guy and Chris Atkins playing a part that was as dull as anything he's ever done, would we expect anything else though. Robert Guillaume will always be Benson to me as I grew up on that show, but here he did a great job as Riley. The movie had a decent start and I was interested, it had some cool kills and I wanted to know where it was going, until it got there. I was let down after a good build up. The Devil itself could've been cool but it really looked so plastic-like and fake that it was laughable. The plot gets confusing at times, and you see many plot holes, but hey it was worth a watch if you had nothing better going on I guess. I struggled between 2 and 3 stars, but ultimately decided it didn't earn that 3rd star.
Leah Barnes I can't comment on the accuracy to the legends as I am English, and have only numerous X Files episodes to compare it to, but this film was one of the funniest things I've seen all week. The shoddy acting, and the terribly executed sex scene proved to really brighten up my rainy Tuesday afternoon. I especially enjoyed the 'attractive blonde's lack of attractiveness, the dramatic pauses and sighs, and Mr. Strouds uncanny likeness to Robert Goulet. I wouldn't go as far as saying avoid this film, although I would definitely say avoid paying for this film. I really feel for the other people whose comments I read who said they spent $7.50 on it, although I have little idea how much it is. Thank god for terrible £1 films at Tesco! Also, anyone else notice that none of the deer's had eyes? Weird.
rixrex You can't go wrong when you buy a tape or DVD for 1 or 2 dollars. If you don't like it, just sell it and pass it along, and you're not out much at all if anything, but this one is one that I'll keep. A nice and eerie telling of the Jersey Devil folklore without being grossly gory. Some here say that it's not being honest to the folklore, but then again it's FOLKLORE. Overall, I would not give it a 9 or 10, I'd say that it's more deserving of a 5 or 6, but there are three things that made me jack up the rating. One, a super performance by Cliff Robertson that is spooky enough but not hammy, tough for good dramatic actors to do with horror material. Two, very cool way that the creature manages to get in and out of locked places, worthy of comparison to the best X-files. Three, the idiots who gave it an undeserved zero or one, that's worth a couple extra points right there. (same ones who give this comment the NO vote) These are the type who are sour on anything that isn't a gorefest of unredeeming violence. You know the type, they think the remake of TCM is better than the original, and they think Hitchcock's Psycho was boring between the killings and should have been in color. Oh, wait a minute, yeah, that was done already!
BRJ1026 A few friends and I live here in New Jersey and when we watched this movie we were extremely disappointed. Living in New Jersey we've heard many stories about the Jersey Devil and this movie is nowhere near the stories I've heard. This movie seemed like it was planned out in about 15 minutes and even the actors were not very impressive either. The quality of the film was bad and sometimes the shot didn't even fit onto the television screen. This movie was poorly done and I feel the writers could have at least made the story sound more similar to the legend itself and not about a shape shifting Indian from 200 years ago. In my opinion, don't waste your time because my friends and I sure did.
