mattkratz This movie impressed me. It shows bullying from both perspectives, especially what it can do to the victim, who was nearly driven to suicide, and the oppressor was given a chance to express her side of things. I liked the filming and points of view of the movie, as it was filmed in a news style and documentary style, kind of like the way The Office or Parks and Recreation were filmed, except this was no sitcom. The harassment scenes were a bit difficult to watch, though, and the girl's reaction and wanting to confide in her friend and film it were good. Hunter King's scenes towards the end were excellent. This is a good movie to show anyone in high school. It has a different perspective now with cyber and text bullying and harassment. All the performances were top notch, and you will love the last shot.*** out of ****
raindrops62 This is the best bully drama I've seen. Instead of it being a generic bland story about unbelievable characters this film was beautifully directed and the actors truly make it a heart wrenching tale.Instead of focusing on the victim, is also dives further to discover the bullied and the bully, covering why bullies do what they do. Not since Breakfast Club has a film reminded its audience that there are often 2 victims in cases of bullying. But it also doesn't diminish the fear and horror of the effects of bullying, it truly makes your eyes tear each time you hear the doctor talk to the parents, each time her parents and Brian blame themselves, and remind victims of the consequences of suicide itself on their family and friends.
MrGKB ...would work better if it didn't try so hard. Ostensibly based on a true-life case, neophyte auteur Amy S. Weber's screenplay suffers from a heavy-handed and overly simplistic message: bullying is bad (no kidding!), which it then betrays with an unusual sympathy for the devil--sorry, I mean bully. Simply put, it's a twist that doesn't pay off with any great satisfaction, falling just short of shooting the film right in the foot. I can understand the impulse to humanize the antagonist, but it's just not handled in a way that respects the victim, at least in my opinion. The acting's good from an ensemble of relative unknowns, led by Hunter "The Young and the Restless" King and Lexi "General Hospital" Ainsworth, with notable support from the likes of Jimmy "Star Trek (2009)" Bennett and tyro Christy Engle. Obviously, Ms. Weber casts well and handles actors with aplomb, but the storytelling still leaves much to be desired. If the subject matter interests you, then "A Girl Like Her" is worth a watch. Otherwise, you can safely give this one a pass.
dagmarort At first I thought the movie was actually a real documentary, only after googling the characters while watching the movie I discovered it wasn't real. The movie is based on a real story and is filmed as if it really happened to the characters in real life, but it is actually totally staged and scripted. I can't get over the fact how amazingly good this film is. I'm not overreacting if I say it is one of the most beautiful eye opening films I've ever seen. The script, the actors, the way of filming, the uncensored footage, everything is exactly how it is supposed to be! I think this movie will get close to home for everyone who has been a victim, a perpetrator or a witness of bullying. This will really wake everybody up, force them to take a look around and to stand up for themselves and/or others. It will hopefully even make bullies realize what they are doing to others, how they make them feel, hopefully causing them to stop doing so.I rate this movie a 10 out of 10 because I can't find a single thing that is wrong. It doesn't only tell one story, the one of the bullied child like usual, but also the one of the bully and the ones of the people that are close to them. It shows an overall, but nevertheless detailed, picture of the daily life in a high school for the bullied/bullies/witnesses. Not only in an American high school, but in almost every high school in every country. The documentary vibe the movies has, makes it even easier to envision how common this is nowadays, and how hurtful it can be. It happens a lot, most of the time without parents or teachers even noticing it. This film gives the perfect representation of the nowadays high schools and it will open up the eyes of a lot of people not noticing how terrible the lives of bullied people can be!
