davidsmama69 I honestly don't know why this movie isn't rated higher than it is. I made the mistake of reading reviews before watching, so I went in with very low expectations of a Saw-type ripoff. It REALLY isn't. The only similar plot point is people sometimes facing events considered torture. It isn't, however, the "main attraction" whereas that is exactly what people want & expect of the Saw series. This movie actually has a plot, and several twists that I never saw coming. Some bigger than others. If you don't enjoy movies similar to Saw (i want to stress...only SIMILAR) then you may not like the movie. Some people just aren't in to it. Otherwise, if you give it a chance and don't nit pick over every tiny detail, its a great movie to watch. It definitely deserves a higher rating.
MattyGibbs The so called ' torture porn' genre isn't really my thing but if a film is well done, it's well done ie SAW and to a much lesser extent Hostel. Straight from the off however it was clear that this was film wasn't going to be falling anywhere near the well done bracket. The film boasts no back story, poor acting and a weak and feeble 'plot'. If you enjoy seeing people being tortured then I suppose there are a couple of scenes you may enjoy but for most part this is an incredibly repetitive and frankly boring film. A thoroughly nasty, worthless piece of film making put together by people relying solely on the hype of SAW to make a bit of cash. I see that this film was a box office flop and that tells you all you need to know about it.
Leofwine_draca Another offensive and derivative story of capture and torture, clearly heavily indebted to the likes of the SAW franchise. CAPTIVITY is a near-plot less affair that tells the story of a model who finds herself at the mercy of a faceless abductor who proceeds to dish out all manner of humiliation to those in his power. So far, so bland, and indeed CAPTIVITY appears to be nothing more than a quick cash-in on more successful movies. Certainly, as a work of art, it's near-worthless; each scene that plays out is so familiar, the scares so overly signposted, that watching it is an utter bore. I'm glad that the 'torture porn' sub-genre appears to have died a quick death lately, because I'm not sure how many more of these bone-headed exercises in pain I could sit through. The biggest surprise is that Larry Cohen wrote this crap – this being the guy who crafted the expert little thriller PHONE BOOTH, a film which pretty much showed you how to make a good thriller in a single location. It's no surprise that tampering went on with the script during the production, jettisoning the crime aspects in favour of more blood and depravity. A second surprise is the choice of director, none other than Roland Joffe who once turned out worthy Hollywood fare like the Patrick Swayze flick CITY OF JOY. God knows what he's doing tarnishing his reputation with this trash. The acting is routine, with Elisha Cuthbert going through every emotion without ever, not for an instant, managing to elicit a moment of sympathy for her character's plight. The talents of Pruitt Taylor Vince are wasted in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it part, and the whole ending seems to hinge on a supposed 'twist' that will be obvious for most viewers, I imagine, about a third of the way in.
Rodrigo Amaro Here's another absurd porn torture "Saw" look-a-like that neither has the intelligence or the tension that movie had and like most of the flicks on the line of the 2004 film it manages to stay on the entertainment level. Well, entertainment might not be the adequate word for something filled with sadism, blood and guts, let's put as on the watchable level, good to pass the time."Captivity" is about a pervert who tortures his victims to please himself and he does that by making strange games that the victim must try to find a way to understand it in order to survive. Elisha Cuthbert is the victim of the most gruesome physical and psychological torture without knowing why she was chosen to be part of this "game" which involves being forced to drink blood among other things. Gets a little better for her when she finds out she's not alone and that companion (Daniel Gilles) will try to help her in finding a way out of there.Fails a lot in its thrilling, shocking parts and if's quite easy to be distracted at those scenes no matter how violent they might be. However, when we get to the twist in the middle (and it's obvious) it gets somewhat interesting, and it's good to follow from here but until there we and the main character have to endure painful moments (more laughable to us in the audience who have to hear screaming each second). This was a new territory for director Roland Joffé (at one time the celebrated creator of "The Killing Fields" and "The Mission") and I wished he never direct this thing that didn't help his already damaged career. Not much his fault, it looks like more of those cases where you're in the Siberia of your career and you get the best of what's available. This wasn't the best but it certainly isn't the worst, it's just weak considering of this man has made almost 30 years ago. Certainly, it's his weakest film. I know fans of the genre will be positively disappointed with this film, better stick to the "Saw" films but there's good things here. Either way I don't see how can this be useful to someone except that it's just a gathering of thrills, screams, blood and a bunch of clichés altogether. Horror movies must be more than that to be spectacularly good. 5/10
