Thy Davideth Death Machine is your standard "trapped in a building with some evil $#!+head lurking about trying to kill us" cliche. And although the concept is overused and abused like a dildo, whatever that means, it was well directed and lots of fun. I do suspect the director is heavily influenced by Sam Raimi because it felt that way, at least in the action sequences. But I don't give a $#!+. The cinematography was good with a cyberpunk feeling to it, the monster machine was cool, the acting was nice but what stands out is the action. There are instances of blood and gore, plentiful chase scenes and gun shooting but the fight between the cyborg and the monster was great. The only complaint is at times the pacing is a bit uneven but eh. Good sci fi horror action film.
Jan Strydom I first saw DEATH MACHINE, back when it came out on VHS, I never thought to much about it other than it was okay, not to long ago I found it on DVD and figured why not buy it and add it to my old film collection, so I did and of course I watched it expecting it to be dated which it was, but I actually had more fun watching it now than when I first saw it VHS, because in way it was refreshing to see a film that wasn't overblown with today's CGI effects, and the cast were really into their characters you just couldn't help but actually go along for the ride. The film also featured a lot of likable characters, such as Hayden Cale the strong female executive, Sam Raimi the leader of the small band of humanitarians on a mission, Yutani, crazier than a loony toon and obsessed with street fighter, and the other good quality about this film is that the characters all have distinctive personalities, unlike a lot of other films where characters tend to feel one dimensional especially with films in the same genre.Overall, it was a fun trip down memory lane and is a film that I enjoy more now than I did before.
jjrad I can't stop my self from commenting on this masterpiece. It is literally the best movie I have ever seen and will probably be my favorite for the rest of my life. Brad Dourif is my favorite actor I saw him in alien 4 and lord of the rings not knowing who he was, then a friend told me to watch child's play. I saw him again so I couldn't stop myself from finding out who he was, I saw at least 5 music videos on you tube about this movie which made me order it. Now I have more than 50 of his films and will keep collecting until all of them sit in my basement with my movies. Highly recommended if you like the cheesy scifi or horror movies, like Hardware, although I did not like hardware because dogs died in it. It is being sold very cheap on amazon and is worth $789,675 to me. Although I bought it for less than ten dollars.
Ky-D A group of people trapped in an isolated location that is inhabited by a vicious and nearly unstoppable creature bent on there demise. The premise is old, but it still holds water, and under Norringtons direction it is both enjoyably kinetic and wholly frustrating. The evil CHAANK corporation (I know, stupid name) is developing unethical and illegal weapons, ranging from advanced robotics to human experimentation. One noble hearted senior executive catches wind of this and wants to put a stop to it. Unfortunately, the royally insane head tech developer (Brad Dourif), who also happens to have a crush on her, learns of her change of heart and isn't about to let that happen. At the same time, a group of rebel soldiers (rebels for whom exactly? Who knows) break into the corporate headquarters to conduct a little merry mischief making, but instead get caught up in Dourif's sour revenge, in the form of a cybernetic killing machine, aptly called the 'war beast'.To Norrington's credit, the film visually well done. Except for an overly long opening section, the film is briskly paced with energy to spare. Lots of camera movement, creative usage of lighting and a smart eye for angles. The editing is for the most part pretty good, but there are a couple of parts that should have been shortened. The script is the real weak point of the film, it just isn't all that good. The film exists in a sci-fi world that is tragically underdeveloped, the characters as 2D as they come, and the plotting lacks any kind of good twist or sense of purpose. The script is awash with horror film references, which work just fine, and cheesy jokes, which don't. The dialogue is much to get excited about, either. As for the 'war beast', it looks nice, but isn't terribly interesting; the big draw for the creature is that it detects pheromones (ie fear) and that is how it is able to track it's prey. It's really nothing more than a big metal bi-ped with lots of teeth and claws that seems to be suffering from a caffeine over-dose. It does cause a couple grisly deaths along the way, but nothing too spectacular. For a low budget effort, it is definitely a worthy accomplishment. Much of Norringtons style is already apparent, just in need of refinement.6/10
