b_kite A Count (Phil Davis) assembles a group of people from different walks of life to tour a Hungarian castle situated in Budapest which has been sealed off for 500 years, they bring with them a werewolf which slowly begins to cut their numbers down. This one which was filmed in Budapest and directed by Neal Sundstrom, whose largest directing credit was that he co-directed 1988's Space Mutiny with Reb Brown. This one contains the same writing team as the boring fourth entry and its nice to see that they stepped it up by giving it a cool as hell castle in Europe with lots of snow going on, it takes on a Agatha Christie feel and ultimately is pretty much a variation of "Ten Little Indians", in parts you almost fill like your drawn into the castle at some points, so the plot is good and unique and fits well. As for the characters they are mostly a little flat but some are likable my three favorites were Ray Price played by co-writer, screenplay writer, and producer Clive Turner (whose name will return again in this franchise!), David Gillespie who was played by Ben Cole and Jonathan Lane who was played by Mark Sivertsen. One thing however I didn't like and I guess its all about the budget, which Wikipedia says was about $2 million, but, I don't think the film used much of the castle, characters stumble into the same places and venture into the same areas several times, but, still its nothing to rant about. The special effects are decent I think they used the wolf costume from the previous installment here and you really don't see any of it nor the werewolf itself, in one scene it looks to be a man in a waist high costume and its in the shadows so you don't see nothing, a better shot of the werewolf's face is later seen towards the end, but, still its not really shown at all, also take note that this is the only film in the entire series to not feature a werewolf transformation so that sucks, what also sucks is that in the very beginning of the film a group of Hungarian people living in the castle commit suicide, I want say why! but, the movie then tries to convince use towards the end SPOILERS! that the group are actually decedents of these people even tho most of them are American and one is Australian so that's kinda hard to believe. Also the film towards the third act kinda gives up who the werewolf is if you pay attention, and I was right! The acting here is decent I got more out of the male characters then the female characters, but, other then the performance by Elizabeth She as Mary Lou Summers and I don't know if she was putting on the whole airhead girl character or if she was acting it out but either way it wasn't that good, everyone else is decent and does a OK job (Davis and Catlin being the two best here), the dialogue however gets pretty stupid in some scenes, but, isn't all bad. The only person here that really went on to do anything else was William Shockley who is mostly known for playing bartender Hank Lawson on "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" and he serves as the only really familiar face, and Victoria Catlin who also played on "Twin Peaks". As for violence and nudity, there's some bloody throat ripping's, but, thats about it, and as for nudity Mary Stavin shows off her breasts in one scene while Elizabeth She despite her acting shows off her beautiful rump and body in another scene. If it wasn't for these two things the film could have probably past for a PG-13 rating. All in all I have to say "Howling V: The Rebirth" is the best of the sequels i have seen so far, its no masterpiece, it suffers from the usual problems here, bad acting, bad occasional dialogue, and also lacks a good soundtrack song like the previous three sequels had even tho the theme here is still good, but, to me it doesn't have to be great, it entertained me that's all that matters.
homecoming8 "Howling V: The Rebirth" was to my knowledge never released in Holland on VHS back in the days. To this day, it's also never released on DVD which is strange, considering most sequels were released like III, IV and even VI. After viewing Part V, it's no longer a mystery: it has to be the worst of all. "The Howling" has something in common with another horror classic, "The Amityville Horror". They both spawned a lot of cheap sequels which had nothing to do with the original story. At least "Howling II" was a guilty-pleasure for me, so bad's it's actually entertaining. At least there were some gory effects in there. "Howling III" (from Part II director Phillip Mora) was awful. "Howling IV" was even worse besides a couple of good special effects from Steve Johnson. So how bad could Part V be compared to those ? "Howling V" is the cheapest one, the location is for 90% a boring castle in Hungary. The cast is terrible and there are no werewolves on the screen. Wait a minute ? No werewolves in a "Howling" movie ?? That's right, there was apparently no money for any effects. Instead we get a dull "who's the killer" story. The game "Clue" in a castle. No thrills, no excitement, no laughs. Very hard to sit through. "Howling V: The Rebirth" is a cheap and awful mess which doesn't live up to his title. On the original "The Howling" DVD there's an interesting interview with director Joe Dante. He doesn't like any of the sequels either. But any "Howling" sequel before this one is at least better than this mess. Avoid, you've been warned..
doctorsmoothlove There is one shot in The Howling 5: Rebirth I will never forget. This is a werewolf movie with less than five minutes of on screen hominid animal attacks. Whenever we do see the beast, the director places the camera on distinct parts its body. The first time this happens, we see its jaws open. The screen is entirely dark. Out of the mouth of badness comes an awful, irrelevant sequel. This is actually a slasher pic with fur. Read the setup. A diverse group of adults is trapped in a Hungarian castle and is stalked individually by a werewolf. Change the words in italics to teenagers, house, and crazy person for your usual genre effort. The movie came out in 1989 near the end of the slasher craze, and being the cash grab that it is, doesn't distinguish itself in any way. This is an improvement over part 4…barely. At least it rips off a sub-genre and not another film in its own series. At least, unlike the last movie, we get some cool scenery to enjoy. This movie takes place in Europe and looks like it was filmed in an old building. I spent a lot of time looking around at the sets or snow-covered ground in between boring segments. The movie is self-aware of its awfulness and provides a musical jolt whenever a werewolf attack is coming. Some refrain from a song by some group called The Factory plays every single time. An extended version plays over the opening credits. I can't determine if the director chose to do this because he deluded himself into thinking it would be scary or if The Factory got a lot of free advertising. The song is stylistically similar to a Beethoven opera and contrasts nicely with the phony "attack" sequences where people are touched by the wolf.A group of international tourists have won a visit to a castle where in 1489 a wealthy family committed mass suicide. A child was smuggled out, and the tourists are its descendants. The family was cursed with lycanthropy and attempted to save the world by preventing its proliferation. If only they could have saved us from watching this play out. That smuggled kid was a werewolf who passed his genes onto the rest of the world or at least the twenty or so people in this movie. Only one of them is actually a werewolf whose powers are unleashed when in the castle. There's a bit of mystery as to who the villain is at first. The guy with the heavy Eastern European accent just HAS to be the antagonist. We are stupefied, of course, until one of the characters disappears whenever the group goes actively looking for the werewolf in a darkened basement twice. Only one of the tourists, by the name of Ray, escapes. The movie is too pedestrian to recommend even to genre fans. People are willing to overlook its dearth of creativity under the strange idea that its slight variation of slasher staples is OK. There is a nice twist to the ending where two men argue over which one of them is the werewolf while ignoring a young girl who is rarely seen on screen. I just wish we saw the werewolf get them. The girl, Mary Lou, makes a cameo in the much-better follow up to this film: The Howling 6: The Freaks. She is also the central antagonist of part 7.Not Recommended
kshitij (axile007) The one thing I liked most about this movie is that it manages to maintain suspense and created an environment suitable and pretty enjoyable for a horror movie. It started with a bunch of tourists gathered for the reopening of an old castle after 500 years. The castle looked awesome.People gathered there as the lucky ones chosen for the castle opening unaware of the horrible truth of what lies ahead. They were being set up to play a bloody game of who is werewolf? Aware of the fact that one is a werewolf among them, you will keep guessing till last, and that's how this film is successful in getting viewer's attention. But its not that the movie is flawless. It would have taken a bit more to make Howling:Rebirth,a top notch movie of this genre.Despite of good plot the weak direction hurdled smoothness of storyline. For instance(spoiler..),the killings should have been shown in much effective & gruesome manner,I never saw the werewolf properly in any of the scene. Howling:Rebirth is being shot at Budapest:Hungary. So of the scenic beauty at the beginning of movie is really good. I liked the concept of ice storm. So best time to enjoy this movie is late, cold night where you can get the proper feel of some of the scary scenes.
