Morten_5 The vampire movie genre is one of the oldest in cinema. It has evolved a lot since Nosferatu (1922) and Dracula (1931). In recent years, the genre has presented a lot of examples of the erotic thriller or drama. With "Kiss of the Damned", director Xan Cassavetes, in her feature film debut, delivers a beautiful, atmospheric example of this, depicting the lives of a community of vampires in Connecticut. Deliciously shot by Tobias Datum, it has all the aesthetics you could ask for. It is well worth your time if you've any interest in the genre.
siderite I watched this film on a whim and I can tell you from the start that is mostly a waste of time. Mostly, because the vampires in the film, classical as they were, had this twist of high class addicts that tried to stay off human blood, but occasionally failed. There was even a night of the vampires where they just sat there and discussed their condition. This had a lot of potential. Unfortunately the discussion was stale, the basic premise of the film just a spout between eternal sisters (now that is hell) and nothing else. The cast was also full of potential. Milo Ventimiglia is a decent actor and rather good looking; I bet he will do increasingly well. Roxane Mesquida is hot as hell, especially in the role of the out of control psychotic bitch. Michael Rapaport, poor guy, had a lot going for him but now is just a fat nobody playing ridiculous roles. However, I am pretty sure this cast could have done a decent job with a good script. Alas, this was anything but one.Add to this the really bad direction, the weak effects, the obsolete camera techniques and you get a movie that looks made by a student for a cinematography exam. Just avoid it.
TdSmth5 At a DVD rental store (they still have those?) Djuna and Paolo are instantly attracted to each other. They go to her place, and what a place it is, but she kicks him out, she suffers from a skin condition she tells him. But they can't resist each other. He comes back, they kiss through a chained door-very cool. She confesses that she's a vampire and everything that entails. He doesn't care. They become intimate, she turns him and introduces him to her world- a world of art-loving ancient vampires who live in hiding, who answer to a boss- the theater actress Xenia.Everything is going well; they make plans to travel to Italy, they hunt together in the woods for animals and drink synthetic blood, no vampire attacks humans. But then Djuna's sister Mimi shows up, and she's bad news- young, reckless, fun-loving, authority-challenging. She's on probation almost as Xenia is sending her to rehab to the West coast so she's only with the sister for a few days. Mimi likes all sorts of sex with humans, and she drinks their blood and kills them, she even seduces Paolo, and has plans for Xenia.Kiss of the Damned is exactly what I imagined and hoped it would be when I saw the original movie poster, not the one slapped on the DVD. It's a tribute to vampire movies from the past. It's very stylish but without replacing style for substance. It's settles on a 70s European horror movie style. It's erotic (plenty of sex but almost no nudity), has great music, and the story moves along more slowly. There are plenty of brilliant shots and camera angles. The closeness of Paolo and Djuna is well portrayed and you root for these two. There are some weaknesses too of course. The aforementioned lack of nudity is odd to say the least. It's unclear why they cast so many French actresses, who may be good actresses when they're speaking French but aren't such good actresses in heavy-accented English. The lead actress is particularly weak, she's somewhat attractive but not enough. However, Roxane Mesquida just steals the show, she's hot and cute and mischievous.Kiss of the Damned is an astonishing feature film debut for writer/director Alexandra Cassavetes. Horror needs more movies like Kiss of the Damned and less remakes and lost-footage junk.
solidmark3 I got this expecting it to be nothing. I had to look up who the guy from Hero's was. I knew I recognized him! Anyway this is a sexy, dark great great great vampire movie. I was thinking about why I like it so much and if it was much like Twilight so people would say it sucked and etc. (I am a big fan of Twilight)I really don't know. I think I love that the vampires were trying to fight against their passion. (some of them) I think they showed the passions really well. I really loved the characters and thought they were excellent, all really good looking and sexy of course! The supporting character of the woman who owned the house was SO good!Lots of us can identify with that feeling, I really want to give myself over to this and I can't? I don't know. Lots of people want vampires to be this way or that way. I guess it's personal preference. I liked these vampires! Dangerous and beautiful. The only reason I didn't give it 10 stars was I thought the ending was a little flat. That's only because I wanted more more more of this movie!I hope you guys like it as much as I did.yours,FattyZ
