TheLittleSongbird For SyFy Mammoth is actually tolerable. The premise was silly in the first place, and I had low expectations but I watched with an open mind with little else constructive to do. It does have problems though, most typical of SyFy and were admittedly on my part expected. There are definitely worse looking creatures in other movies, but the mammoth does look very fake and un-menacing, and the editing does betray this at times. Think a giant vacuum on legs and you have the mammoth here. The script mostly is lazy, any attempts at humour come across as cheesy and unfunny, while the story suffers from predictability and one too many ridiculous scenes like the mammoth soul-sucking with its trunk and it managing to sneak up behind its victims without them hearing it(either it was a logic lapse, a case of character stupidity or both). The characters are mixed, a couple are surprisingly likable if rather clichéd but others verge on annoying and are not developed enough. On the plus side, it does move quickly and doesn't feel dull unlike other SyFy features. The editing is not too hackneyed, despite moments where it all too obviously betrays the cheapness of the effects, and the scenery and lighting have some atmosphere. The score is quirky and haunting, and I did enjoy some of the references and homages, they were fun to spot and didn't feel like rip-offs. The direction is competent enough and the acting is better than average, especially from Summer Glau and Tom Skerritt. Vincent Ventresca also does his best with little. In conclusion, a reasonably fun movie, cheesy, predictable and ridiculous and the mammoth is not convincing enough, but the acting, the fact that it never bored me, the music and the references and homages were enough to enable me to stick with it. 5/10 Bethany Cox
ZombieSteak .com I don't have any children myself, but I do know when I go to parties or visit families who have children usually there is a movie being played on TV that is focused towards kids…. This is what this movie reminded me of.This movie wasn't bad, but if you go into this movie thinking it's going to be amazing you will be disappointed. The script was sort of silly, like I mentioned above it was very "childlike" with its jokes and stuff. The graphics were pretty bad and I didn't even realize half of the storyline until I read the actual description on this site. Aside from all of that it was such a cute and endearing movie I have to admit I really enjoyed it.I will call this movie cute and silly if you don't take it too seriously you will probably enjoy it. It did remind me somewhat of Men in Black with its "Alien Detectives" with a little bit of the corniness of the movies from the 50's and 60's.ZombieSteak.com - Discover a new world of horror films, designed just for you.
WakenPayne I have seen the whole film the plot is father misses his daughter's (Summer Glau) birthday and he leaves he can't start the car the cell phones didn't work and a meteor hits the museum and a security guard investigates the mammoth wraps it's trunk around him and sucks his soul out and he goes home after a police investigation and 2 Agents investigate it and then at home the grandfather gives Summer's character a car (which I can't get my head around why the character is called Jack) and he arrives she is disappointed that he missed her birthday and she sneaks out with her boyfriend or something and takes her car the father realises this and HE'S the one who's ####ed off and then he leaves to look for her and he opens the door and now I have seen more of it these 2 agents question him on the way to find his daughter Jack and it's an outdoor type one and they dance while listening to their Ipods and then no time to waste the Mammoth appears and try to kill the people there they run away from it they drive down woods and there they are in the street and Frank Abernathy (the father) after seeing Glau really really scared of the Mammoth he thinks the boyfriend is giving her drugs and then the Mammoth appears and the agents shoot it with advanced guns but a pistol sort of like the ones Will Smith had in Men In Black but it doesn't make great big holes and they run away shooting it they run through cropfields anyway the Mammoth kills one of the Agents they continue running to the car of which they abandoned but so the Mammoth can't see them and anyway they succeed and they drive away from it and the agent says we have limited time before the government wipes out the town because of the Mammoth and they go to a morgue the cop (not those 2 Idiots to the people who watched it) and a forensic scientist are looking at the meteor (it's small) and the agent carry's in the colleague dead with the father Summer Glau and the boyfriend they show them something in a freezer the scientist offers them popsicles but they refuse and they put out a human hand (and I was thinking why would they keep a human hand with popsicle) and they try to stop the Mammoth they find out the only way to stop it is to freeze it and Frank finds out the tablet shaped thing in the mammoth ice cube is a tracking device so they lure the mammoth im this factory oh and the old guy helps right so here's the final climactic fight and they lock the Mammoth away and the old guy makes a sacrifice to help the town then you find he's still alive only frozen. This Movie is a very very very good movie I showed the trailer to someone I know they think it's just like Black Sheep but this is way way better
wsmith-26 I admit that SCI FI has set the bar mighty low when it comes to its original movies. So, I tuned in to Mammoth expecting more of the same. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed this movie.Vincent Ventresca as Dr. Frank Abernathy is the main reason the movie works. He is sort of a cross between Bruce Campbell and the Absent Minded Professor, and brings a much needed dose of comedy to the story. The Mammoth itself is an unimpressive, not scary, CGI mess. But Tim Cox wisely minimizes its screen time and leaves it to the actors to carry the movie, and they do a fine job.The movie moves at a brisk enough pace that you are distracted from the lack of a strong story line. But, again, this movie is about fun, not scares. I recommend it.
