hongkong666 It feels a little odd to put Whisper into the Horror movie genre. Everything not regarding the kidnapped boy, David, has this Thriller vibe to it. At times you can even call it a Psycho Thriller. But that is fine, because this way fans of connecting genres may find this movie interesting as well. Most outstanding acting in my opinion were those of Joel Edgerton and Josh Holloway, although I get the feeling that Holloway always has to reprise his role as "Sawyer" of the Lost series. Don't get me wrong, he does this great, but I bet there would be more potential in this actor which could be brought to the screen. Blake Woodruff in his role as David absolutely makes you think of movies of the Omen franchise and even though we are watching a child actor, he absoutely inhabits the role of an adult. There is nothing child-like on this character. Sometimes this can feel a little too polished and also the ending about who was behind the entire kidnapping job, is someting we have seen many times before. Just a little more creative writing would do this movie a big favour.
daggersineyes It started off interesting enough. I liked the opening scene and the kidnap scenario was kind of interesting. And then it just went downhill fast. Bad script, lousy direction and woeful acting (not entirely the actors fault given the bad script/direction) and a silly messy storyline make for a snooze-fest that had me reaching for the fastforward button very early in the show. The child actor was wooden and unconvincing. His acting abilities were limited to looking vaguely bored and looking vaguely smug. He wasn't creepy or scary. Just irritating and precocious. There was no suspense, no thrills, no scares, no intrigue, no drama, no originality, just nothing. I honestly can't see who would like this film. Finally, I couldn't care less about any of the characters or what happened to them, they were non-entities with no personalities or interesting characteristics. Except the kid, he was annoying me so badly with his wooden acting and lame smug expression I was hoping someone would kill him and put us all out of our misery. Fortunately that wasn't necessary as I simply pressed eject immediately after yet another smug look from the child and stopped watching the movie about half way through. Don't waste your time on this one. If you want to see truly creepy child actors, good acting, a good plot and experience true jump scares & suspense watch Mama instead.
MissOceanB Not terribly impressed with Whisper for reasons that follow. The trailer pretty much gives everything away. What you see is what you get, except that the film does have a few twists and turns. The child actor who, as we know from the trailer, is abducted, is almost nauseatingly conceited and OVER ACTS in his role. There are some interesting parts of the storyline which could have been better developed, not to mention a deeper character development wouldn't have hurt. There are times it seems the film drags on and then "BOO", a scary moment appears. I read some other reviews of this title and someone compared this film to The Ring and The Omen. The Ring? No, The Ring was very well done and Whisper is nothing like The Ring, which did have genuine creepy moments. As for The Omen, well, we know (again just by viewing the trailer) that there is something wrong with this boy but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it is as good as The Omen. Similar behaviour, perhaps, but nowhere near as good. Finally, I did enjoy the kidnapping aspects and how that unfolded, which made the film more of a Thriller. This film is great for the average individual or group looking for a scary thrill but will not hold up to the standards of big Horror fans.
pepekwa Its very surprising to see a top studio like Universal let a rookie writer and rookie director make a complete hash of a movie. This movie had so many plot holes I don't know where to begin. Most importantly though, we never find out what David was, an angel, a demon, a child with amazing powers, were the others just having visions etc. At least in a movie like the Omen, you knew what the child stood for. And like many other poorly written and contrived movies, the ending was very weak, the kid was made out to be invincible so he shouldn't have died and I don't think anybody got anything out of max giving away the money. The alternate ending was better but this movie was so poorly put together, nothing could really save it. In the making of on the DVD, a lot was made of the fact that Dean Cundey was the director of photography (when do they ever get top billing) and it transpired that he was helping the director do most of the shoots which goes back to my original point. At least the beautiful sarah wayne callies was worth looking at.
