SusanAdebisi Hugely underrated on release, probably still so now this Is an excellent cautionary tale of friendship & naivety. For all the world It lulls you In to thinking It's a quirky, coming of age drama but mutates Into something very dark - as the main maniac vows. The beauty Is In the simplicity, concentrating on a handful of humdrum people In an unremarkable setting leaving It to the characters & actual story to do the work. It's Paddy Considine's eclectic performance as the small time psycho that dictates the tone & holds the film together - varying from hysterical oddness to very sinister Indeed. Honestly Morell portrays more complexities than many rubbish films I've wasted time/money on.The military green mini-van should be In a museum somewhere as It's priceless and his attempt at seduction Is Inspired. This Is a guy who truly believes a purple shell suit/visor Is going to Impress women - clearly the work of a sick mind. Despite all his great dialogue he's a sort of twisted pied piper, ultimately shown up for what he Is but even after completely losing the plot Considine Is damn funny - ask flash boy. And he must get some sort of award for possibly the least challenging question ever: "do you want me to put a hammer round your yead?, do you want It?" Turning a blind eye to his seriously manipulative, cynical ways Morell would be great entertainment on his own but that would detract from the story. At It's core this Is a sympathetic - almost feel good film and credit to the kids Andrew Shim & Ben Marshall for balanced displays belying the fact they were merely kids at the time. Shane Meadows Is a talented, no gimmick director who will hopefully go far - taking Paddy along with him for the ride.
D-dogma1490 An independent film that is the most outstanding blend of comedy and drama. This movie is an absolute must see. Containing a pair of the friendliest friends in the world and a strange loner that steals your heart then throws it right back at you. All of the characters capture into a storyline that won't let you go. An odd, yet highly affect soundtrack track of finger-picked guitar tunes with vocals stranger then that of the films antagonist, can often be found aiding our sad and pensive characters through this brilliant tapestry of emotion. If your looking for a flick with a stylistic soundtrack and the complete "laugh and cry" package A Room for Romeo Brass is your film. Definitely one of my favorite Indies so far.
thevoiceofjerico I find Morell so funny in this film because he behaves so weirdly. I like the fact that he fancies that young girl and he tries everything just to impress her but just makes an even bigger fool out of himself. The best part is when they're alone and he says "Touch it, go on touch it" the girl then runs away. On a serious note, it's a shame that film ends badly for him since he experienced such a rough childhood.....it was inevitable though since he was now a danger to society.
tonywilkes I really liked this film, until I started to realise that the Morrell character wasn't being handled with any kind of compassion. And then it really p***ed me off. It's fairly obvious that he has mental problems, and suffered abuse when younger, yet the film tells us that scary freaks should get the kicking they deserve and then normal people can sit down and have a good cup of tea without worrying about it. If the film had shown a twelve year old boy with mental difficulties getting knocked around by his father, there would have been buckets of sympathy - but once he grows up into the disturbed adult he's destined to be, all that is forgotten and he's just some weirdo that enjoys hanging around with little children. He's not some calculating criminal - he's got problems, but apparently no-one cares about that. There's enough of a problem with people's negative attitudes to mental health without legitimising it on film - and the fact that none of the reviewers ever gave this a second thought is a little worrying...
