politehere I've always been looking for horror movies with 6+ or at least 5+ ratings, but lately I've been watching a number of horror movies with ratings between 4 and 5, which I expected to mean the movie was terrible, and yet I found them to be some of the best and most effective horror movies I've seen thus far. On the contrary, I watched movies like The Conjuring, Mama, The Woman in Black, Sinister, etc. and was bored beyond what words can describe. It so happens that Barricade is yet still one of those overlooked hidden gems in this seemingly not so popular genre. Not only did Barricade have likable characters with awesome performances but also it employed lots of effective jump scares and a really creepy atmosphere. It had more than one twist and every one of them came as a big surprise. It created false expectations and then proved me wrong. I totally love these kinds of movies and I wish there were more horror movies like this.Judging by the reviews I can tell people gave it low ratings just because it confused them. I think it's not a good enough reason to judge a movie so poorly. The movie was meant to confuse the audience and did so effectively. Moreover, it didn't "leave the audience confused" like some other movies do and everything made sense in the end. The confusion did not in any way get in the way of its jump scares, so I can't really complain. Ironically, a movie such as "Stay (2005)" gets a very high score despite its being 100 times more confusing than Barricade. Why did people like it so much? Because it explained everything in the end. The same is true with Barricade, so I don't really understand all the hate.As a horror movie fan, I strongly recommend Barricade. It's a great movie. I give it 8/10 and I'm not going to judge horror movies by their IMDb ratings anymore.
jkrencher If you're looking for torture pron or a gorefest, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a good old-fashioned thriller, one that makes you jump, bite your nails, and gasp... if you're looking for a movie that keeps you on the edge of the seat and makes you wipe the sweat from your brow when it's over... if you're looking for a horror movie that you can watch with the family (teenagers and up) without worrying about sex, nudity, language, gore, or excessive violence but that will still scare the living crap out of you... LOOK NO FURTHER.Excellent production value despite a low budget. Plenty of chills and suspense, with the requisite twists. Excellent, solid performances from the cast--even from the kids.Ignore the naysayers: this is like The Shining in that they both involve families in the mountains with snow. That's about the extent. Those who tear it down either have an axe to grind or just can't appreciate a bloodless, sexless horror movie.I love horror of all kinds and media, and frankly I can't recommend this movie enough.
gavin6942 A father's quiet retreat to the woods with his two children turns into a fight for survival.Director Andrew Currie studied under Norman Jewison and wowed horror fans with his film "Fido", which mixed George Romero and Jacques Tourneur, with a dash of humor. This time around he does not quite reach that same level. Although he has some modest star power (Eric McCormack of "Will and Grace") leading the way, it may not matter. While there is obviously decent production value and nice use of color (the tints and shadows make the cold just a little bit colder), something seems off and caused this one to go under the radar and be quickly forgotten. What does this mean for Currie? A 50-50 batting average means his next one has to be great. Bring it on, Currie.
rcschran I love a good suspenseful horror movie as much as the next person but this was awful. In the beginning of the movie it has a decent start, but that is as far as anyone should watch. The first 80% of the movie is a man running in circles. This movie is very hard to follow and leaves you asking "what the heck?" every 5 minutes. It is totally lacking a good plot. It was so hard to watch but i endured. I was hoping for an ending that would kick butt and make it all worth while. Not such the case. The ending was terrible. They could've made so many other endings that would've been better. However it does tie the movie together and explains the movie but after watching it, it needs the description of horror or suspenseful ripped from it. Trust me, don't waste your time.
