Stevieboy666 This opens up with the brutal killing of a father and mother by an unknown, supernatural- like killer and witnessed by their two young children. Ten years on and the daughter checks into a mental health unit, where her brother had also been a patient, and naturally people start being killed by an unknown killer. Now I really didn't like Boogeyman (2005), found it very disappointing, so I was relieved to find that this was by far a much better film. It's pretty low budget, straight to video, but that's quite normal in modern horror. Acting, special effects and production values are all good. Tobin Bell, aka Jigsaw, stars as a creepy doctor, which was a bonus. There are some very good death scenes, my favourite being a girl who self harms having her arms invaded by maggots, intercut with scenes of a couple having sex (yes, there's some gratuitous nudity thrown in, obviously a body double though). Another sees a victim having involuntary open heart surgery. Overall a decent enough slasher movie, one that I'd probably watch again. Keep watching the credits as there's a brief post credit scene.
Leofwine_draca I absolutely hated the original BOOGEYMAN, which I still consider to be one of the very worst movies I've ever sat through, so it was with some reluctance that I sat down to watch this sequel when I saw it was on television. Thankfully, it's an unconnected sequel and an entirely different kind of movie. It's not a brilliant film by any means, but it works as a solid low budget horror and is a lot more effective than a lot of dross out there. To be honest, this film doesn't have to do a lot to succeed. It's set in an asylum, and history has shown us that asylum-set horror films are usually very effective at conjuring up a spooky atmosphere. It's a slasher film, quickly adopting the usual template – about ten minutes waiting around until a gruesome death, then a face-off between sole survivor and killer at the climax – but as I haven't watched any slashers in a while I didn't mind that at all. Sure, the cast are a bunch of unknowns and their acting is only moderately effective, but it could be a lot worse.Director Jeff Betancourt cut his teeth as an editor on the likes of THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, so he knows his stuff and does a good job. Plus, the film provides work for two veteran actors – Tobin Bell, best known as Jigsaw in the SAW franchise, and Renee O'Connor, best known for her portrayal of Gabrielle in '90s TV series XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. The mention of SAW brings me to another point: this film's deaths. They're as gruesome as anything you'll witness in those bloody horror films, and actually seem to have been modelled on the type of nasty, in-your-face torture found in the SAWs. Bodily dismemberment, self harm, and explosion are the order of the day. Okay, so this film does have one of the most obvious 'twist' endings ever – one of those ones you'll guess right at the very beginning – but don't let that put you off. BOOGEYMAN 2 is a horror effort that offers chills and gore in equal amount.
Scott LeBrun Yet another ho-hum made-to-order horror film actually cashing in on the "Boogeyman" concept, except turning this indefinable horrific entity into a mindless slasher. It's very routine overall; the incredible sincerity from some of the cast members can only help so much. If you're a gore fanatic, you'll be pleased with the wanton cruelty and sadism on display, but otherwise this sequel fails to satisfy. The one memorable scene involves maggots and is monumentally squirm-inducing.Henry and Laura Porter witnessed a maniac butchering their parents long ago, and ten years later they're still traumatized. Henry has just gotten out of the hospital, and she decides that she'll go in herself and try to face her fears. What follows is very predictable, as Laura (Danielle Savre) and her fellow patients begin to be stalked and slaughtered by a monster wielding a wicked knife. The script by Brian Sieve is poorly written, and Jeff Betancourts' direction is uninspired. We've all seen hospital / asylum / clinic horror like this before, and no amount of deliberately gloomy atmosphere or brutal violence is going to make that much of a difference. This can only be recommended to the most horror hungry and undemanding of the audience, who'll lap anything up as long as there's gore and nudity. Savre is fairly appealing in the lead, although the young cast is largely nondescript. Tobin Bell as Dr. Red Herring is really just picking up a paycheque here, but Renee O'Connor of 'Xena' fame isn't bad as a concerned psychiatrist.Overall this is nothing more than a space filler on store shelves.Four out of 10.
deema-92 It was the most ridiculous movie I've ever seen, however it did its part in entertaining me unlike other horror movies. I either look for the thrill factor, or at least jumpy scenes, which this movie failed to provide. Its attempt to scare the audience with quirky scenarios though did evoke an emotion out of me, though. I couldn't stop laughing hysterically throughout the movie.I'm sorry, but I don't know how somebody can get scared by the mere idea of literally gaining weight to the brink of explosion, or how realistic a severe OCD patient decides to drink bleach after eating a bag of chips with cockroaches in it. It just doesn't scare me. However, this movie entertained me for the wrong reasons and I don't think I'll ever forget it, so... good job.
