reaseltbim I can Appreciate what James Franco was going for in here and i can appreciate the love for the original movie and the love for the underground cult following that this movie has and the story behind it. I Can see that James Franco had the best intentions when making this movie and he tried his best at playing tommy, and for the most part, it works and it was a great performance. He really is the best thing about the movieBut I have to admit that i felt underwhelmed when watching this. the movie didn't cover some of the most important parts of the book and some of the stuff they did cover was kind of anticlimactic, I was hoping for a funnier movie that showed more of the background behind the making of the room and not just a remake of those scenes in the movie. I was hoping for a closer look at the lives of the people making the movie and the people behind the camera. but we barely got any of that. I can understand they only have a certain amount of time to tell this story but i was kind of baffled by some of the things they chose to do and some of the things they left out. I also did not like how they changed so much from some of the aspects of the story, It is one thing to not have enough time to film everything and they are constricted by time, but why did they have to make up stuff? why create fictional events on a movie based on real life? it just didnt make much sense. the movie was okay but it wasn't the greatest retelling i was hoping for
jsph_calabrese Taking on the "worst movie ever" as source material was quite an ambitious risk for James Franco. He stayed in character the entire shoot, including while he directed, and opines it to be "the first time ever that a director was directing himself in a movie, playing a character that was a director directing himself in a movie." His efforts here could be perceived as either gimmicky or brilliant. I personally think it's the latter, and probably his best work to date, both as actor and director.I found myself surprised by the crowd's roars of laughter through the entire runtime of an opening night showing. It certainly is a hilarious movie, but it is equally as much a drama. The Disaster Artist is about dreaming, creating, and failing. It's about the unlikely connectivity of outsiders and a lesson in true friendship. It's a story of overcoming rejection by learning to accept yourself. Enjoy it anyway you please, but pay close attention to the nuances and you may notice a subtle vein of profound sadness flowing throughout.
j238 The focus of the film is a bizarre character portrayed by James Franco. (Good performance by the way, James) All the character's strange traits take our attention, but don't do anything for this film. Backstory, a mystery. Motives, hard to say. Every aspect of the plot could have been done with a normal character, which leaves me wondering what the point was. Maybe with a normal character, I could have focused on the story & given this film some better appreciation.
ebbejean The book is about the complicated friendship between Sestero and Wiseau, along with how they made The Room. It's worth reading. The movie is a vanity project for James Franco and a distracting parade of celebrities who want the audience to know they "get it".
